I was looking through Powell's website at a cole 2 row 3 point hitch planter for 3 or 4 acres of field corn. List is around $2,600

Is this a good choice? Is their a less expensive alternative?

JD and CaseIH (CNH now) seem to have left the 2 row business.

Yeah,. that is high for a planter, BUT the old planters always left skips in the field. They even made planters that you would carry out into the field to replant the areas where the skips appeared. I thought it was just all the ones I was around in my lifetime, but Ive looked at some planter advertisments, and corn planting consistancy isnt much of one of them. I guess they couldnt quite figure out how to do it whereas nowadays its hard to find a skip in a field planted with a modern planter. If you buy an old planter, be sure you know what size plates you have and buy corn seed that size. I have small, med flat, med round, and large, and I dont know if that is all of them or not. I usually try to plant med flats. Good luck

at local auctions here in Mo. you can buy 4 row planters for less than $50. even if you only want a 2 row, a good welding shop can do some modification for a lot less than $2600.

Problem is that I'm in the northeast where the farmer now grows houses.

Whew, didn't want to comment for fear I was the abnormal one, but like the others say, you can buy a good used 2-4 row for 10% of that money or less. Not that I wish to discurage new purchases or the stimulating of the ecconomy. :)

If you plant 100 acres in your lifetime, that's 260 an acre costs in just the planter. Whew!

I just bought an International 15 row 3-point modified for 15" bean planting. Paid $250 for the whole thing. I should weld up frames, sell it off at 2 row units for $200. Could make a killing!

Check your math, maybe. I make it $26.00/@ not $260.00; still too much.

You know, in school I was always real good at math, as I got the concept. Problem was, I always missed a plus or minus sign, or a decimal place... Sigh. The proof is in the details. :)

Think I would look around a bit. Sounds pretty steep. When I found mine guy had three or four. He told me he want $50 each. I was looking or sickle bar parts. He threw a corn planter in the pile because it was piled on top of the extra bar I wanted. He since sold out and I think the rest went for scrap.

I have a JD 494A four row planter that has been kept undercover that I would let go for $250, works well. I believe the rows are adjustabel from about 28-42", would have to look at the manual, if you are using it for sweet corn and only want two rows, I've seen some take two rows off. If you are interested, email me, I live near Gettysburg, PA.

Walt

I'm interested in the planter and sent a couple of e-mails.

If you're still interested in selling it let me know.
