Looking at an old JD 510 big round baler. Anyone care to share their pro's and con's of this model?

Newer belts and sheet metal looks good. Dealer is asking $3000 (western Illinois) region.

Seems pretty high to me. In my opinion I would stay away from that model, there are a lot newer used balers for about that price. Old timey equipment is fine to have but if you HAVE to rely on it to get your crop in a small amount of time, these oldies just don't cut it. I'd get a more modern baler if you need a working machine.

They are asking that at deal lots here too, but it seems quite high. Others have said the 510 has spring tension, not as good as hydraulic.

I just picked up a Verneer 605F, that has hyd tention, and I think I can see that hyd is better. Dealer to the north is asking $3500 for a 605F, at auction to the west mine was $1600. I think I'll need to put $200 of parts into it as the tie arm isn't quite right, but made 40 bales as is, works pretty good.
