I'm converting a 500 gallon fuel oil tank to a water wagon for watering newely set out trees and shrubs well away from a source of water. Do any of you know the best way to clean out any residue of fuel oil that may still be in the tank. thanks

I'd put in some detergent, fill it 1/3 with water, pull it around the section a few times, getting it sloshing real good. Then open the drain, and run around the section one more time. If there is any residue left, pull it into the car wash in town. Hot soap and pressure should break anything else loose. John in Nebraska.

Put 4 or 5 cans of Red Devil lye in then fill the tank with water. Let it set 5 or 6 hours or over nite, drain and flush out tank. Should be clean as a whistle. Be sure to wear rubber gloves and safety glasses when you do it.

While you're washing it out with water, use a gallon or two of cheap laundry detergent. Hot water will aslo help if you can come up with that much.

Oil and water don't mix, so any water you put in the tank will float all the oil out the top of the tank. If you can use something to heat the water it would be sure to get all the oil out of the pores in the metal tank.
