Dragging out fill dirt for construction crew and buried my 550 in one of the 1000 holes they have created.

Backhoe battery is dead and fear it is stuck more than truck can pull out. Talking about my dilema at work and older fella mentioned his granddad would chain a post to the tire when stuck in a wet field.

Try as I might I can not seem to make this work. What's the magic trick?
Pic here is the first time this spring.

Stuck AGAIN in the FL muck but not as bad as pic :)

A gun who worked for my father also had a lawn care business on the side. He borrowed my dads 966 and attemped to bushhog one of his clients swampland. He got stuck right up to the axles all 12,000+ #'s worth. We unhooked the bushhog and pulled it out first. We then tried to pul it out with my dad's other tractor a 686 w/ duals but couldn't.

Went home and got this huge 6X10 board that was about 10' long. Chained it across both rear tires. With the dif locked we backed the tractor up 1/4 turn so that the rear wheels were on top of the board. This was done at slow idle and very carefully with my other foot on the brakes. Unchained the board hooked up the 686. It pulled it right out.

Ripped up the guy's lawn real good. The owner had the nerve to ask if I was going to fix the lawn. I told him he knew better then to ask someone to go back their and wasn't that the same spot he stuck a little bobcat last year. The guy who worked for my dad didn't know this.

You can probably use the board trick to lift the tractor out of the ground like I did. I wouldn't tie boards to each wheel and try this. If one wheel brakes loose it will make a turn quicker then you can stop it and smash the fender or worse. Also only do this when backing up as the tractor may choose to rotate instead of the tires.

my 2 cents.

Haven't tried it but my neighbor who is 70 plus talked about an older gentleman who would use a tree to get a tractor or vehicle unstuck. He pulled out a much larger JD with an 8N. The idea was to use the trunk of the tree as a lever. You need a center point to act as the fulcrum and hold the trunk in place. He cut a tree off about waist high and chained the trunk to it. By sliding the center point to one side you can multiply the force from a smaller pulling vehicle to allow you to pull a larger stuck vehicle. May not have worked in this situation but could help in others.

Alrighty gents I got the msg. about risk of using pole etc. to get out. While I was semi-aware of the risk many shared more than I knew. Needless to say I did not use the post method. I got my K3500 truck out there and hooked on. Pulled from dry ground and got the tractor out. Need to make sure I don't do much more nite driving in the muck.

Surprisingly though lots of folks mentioned placing post perpendicular to the tires. My thoughts were to chain the post parrallel to the tires, go fwd. in 1st or 2nd gear. I expected tire to rotate and part of post that extended beyond tire would hit the muck and act as a paddle lifting me and pushing me fwd. I saw minimal risk with this but chose the truck as it was tried and true.

The cribbing works but is extremely time consuming made even worse by having to slug thru knee deep muck. Backhoe was to big to manuver into position as I was next to new house and in between pallets of brick.

Thanks just the same. Here's to keeping it in on dry ground. Grins from FL :)

HI Shep

Glad to see you got it out!! I've been thinking about how to tell you a way but you got it out the best way I know of. Yes Be safe and carefull, tractor is not worth getting hurt or killed over, be glad of that, you just got it stuck and didn't turn her over, on you. If I may never work in a new area( new as in worked new , or stange ) when too tried or after dark, just not worth it .

God Bless and Be safe !!

What you have in mind is chaining a fence post to the tire thru the rim (not by the valve stem) and inching out. Good way to ruin a tire or fenders, or flip tractor backwards if yourre not used to doing it. Proper procedure would be get someone to pull you out and lean on the post til they get there.Seriously, If you have much of a backhoe you ought to be able to pull it out with that. If you have an implement on try to unhook it, pull it out with hoe ,use enuf chain to stay on hard ground then you can try to pull it out either direction. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

JUMP THE BACKHOE OFF OR GET A BATTERY FOR IT WHAT YOU ARE TALKIN ABOUT DOING WITH THE FENCE POST IS A GOOD WAY TO LEAVE HERE BEFORE YOUR TIME!!!

I wish that you were nearby - my PTO winch on my old Land Cruiser pickup would slide your old tractor right out. I can reach about 300 feet before adding additional cable or chains. You might want to disconnect your box blade if it adds too much drag because the lift won't go any higher. I recently pulled my neighbor's tractor out of a creek and then pulled the bush hog out separately because we didn't want to damage it. Just find somebody with a winch that wants to spool it out for fun sometimes. Depending on soil conditions, it might be best to leave the tractor in neutral so that rear tires quit digging trenches and roll up on top.

I'm in agreement with JMS/MN and his post, as well as Screaminghollow's suggestion about jaking it up, then using the post for cribbing. There are countless people out there who've done this, and because it worked, they'll do it again....but it's NOT a safe thing to do!

Does the tractor have a 3pt hitch with DOWN pressure? If so, try lifting the back of the tractor somewhat by cribbing under the drawbar and using the hydraulics to raise the tractor a little at a time. My Dad and I got a farm truck out of a hole once by lifting the rear wheels with the hydraulics on the bed after the back of it was cribbed up. We raised the rear wheels enough to put planks under, then drive out. This same technique could be put to use on a tractor.

This is just another dumb idea, but a great way to get yourself killed. Get another tractor, or a tow truck. Save the family some grief. But what do I know after 30 years of real experience? Criticize anyone around here and expect to get crucified!

Gotta disagree with you on this one Jim. Though I wont crusify you while I'm at it.
The old Illinois farmer that used to come up to the resort every summer taught me to do it by putting the log Behind the tire and BACKING on to it. Of course I wouldn't listen to him and went and got my cousin. Funny but he had it out by the time we got back with the other tractor. Who would have guessed that such an old fool could be so clever. (I was 15 he was 70)
He kind of asked me why I went in there in the first place. Of course I could only mumble something or other.
He told me of the same principle in the winter when the tire chains have had a chance to freeze into the ice. That you always break them loose in reverse first because someone he knew died when the tractor reared right over on top of him.
After he got it out and didn't tell my dad I liked him more and would tell him where the fish were.

Jerry, your disagreement is respectfully accepted! I do agree that this works, but it is dangerous- many have been killed by it. Driver has less than one-half wheel revolution to stop the tractor, and gains maybe four feet. Your friend, going in reverse was less at risk, but reverse is not always an option. Think of the shock to family members or EMT, coming upon a stump of a body with the head as mush splattered into the steering wheel. That's reality. No one should even tell another how to attempt it. Farmers have always been willing to help one another- get a friend to give a pull. Your comments about mumbling are real- I never could come home as a youngster, to tell Dad I had the tractor stuck, without a grin on my face! Try as I might, it always happened. Seems like my kids had the same problem. Must be genetic!

1. Use the fence post before you get badly stuck.
2. Lie a post crossover in front of each driving wheel. Half under the tractor belly if possible, half outside the wheel.
3. Chain the post to the tyre. Keep clear of the valve.
4. Use lowest gear and creep until the tractor is sitting on top of the posts.
5. EITHER keep going until you can release the chains OR fill in the holes and reverse onto the fill then disconnect the chains.

here's how we do it...
get a railroad tie or similar for each wheel (it's got to be very strong). lay the tie perpendicular to the length of the tractor in front of each wheel, as close to the wheel as you can get it. chain the tie to each wheel, threading the chain through a hole in the hub or rim, remove as much slack as you can when doing this. here's the important part...get another tractor or something to pull the front of the tractor. if nothing else it will be able to offset the tendency of the stuck tractor to roll backwards. one person on the front tractor, one on the stuck, the front tractor is in low or 2nd gear, the stuck tractor is in low, engine as near idle as it can to have power to pull itself up. front tractor lets out clutch while stuck tractor operator feathers his/her clutch out slowly.when it pops out be ready to stop, or the ties will come around and wreck the fenders and YOU! we usually have the majority of the tie length in the outside direction from each wheel (left and right) to provide some clearance.
should have a 3rd person to watch and holler just in case, etc. this can break tire sidewalls on old or weak rubber. we only use this as a last resort. when you are stuck to or past the axles it's almost the only way. if you have money for winching or whatever that is safer. there's nothing in our area that can (or is willing to) get a big tractor like a 1256 IH out though, so we end up doing this more than we'd like to.

How far away from solid ground are ya? If you are not too far I think I would try to gather up enough chain or tow straps and give pulling out a try first. A friend with a 1 ton 4x4 shouldn't have much trouble pulling her out especially if you have the tractor going offering whatever help it can. Thats what I would try anyhow, good luck!

You get a tractor out in a field that wet up here in North Carolina with the red clay, and you have red concrete clods and clumps when it dries for the rest of your life.

Yeah old timers would do that. If you have access to a law library read a U.S. District Court Case of Singleton vs International Harvester. (Md) Mr. Singleton did that very thing with an old farmall. Of course it flipped over backwards and smashed his butt into the ground. His family didn't get a dime. I once saw a farmer try to pull a stump with an old deere. He had the chain real close to the back of the tractor. That front ewnd was about five feet off the ground when he realized what was happening and pushed in the clutch.

The only proper way to use a fence post in this situation is to jack the sucker up and put timbers/planks/fence posts, etc under it.

There isn't a right way. You can get a couple real unpleasant results. Going over backwards, or turning the log around and smashing you and or the tractor.

Seems there's a lot of experts out there. But the 'rear-up' warnings ARE worth listening to. Even if you have a wheel tractor with dual tyres on the rear and you get it well bogged, be careful trying to drive it out under its own steam. If the wheels are well stuck, it will simply wind itself up over the bull gears and tip over backwards unless you have a substantial load attached to the drawbar. Trouble with that is the load is going to make it harder to get out.
The 'tie on a log' trick works much better and is much safer with crawler tractors. Happy un-bogging.
