I have an opportunity to get a JD 214 wire tie baler. Can anybody give me information on this baler? What years was it manufactured? I don't have a serial number yet. It was used most recently several years ago to bale wheat straw, but has been stored in a barn. Tires are flat, but it was working well the last time it was used. I assume twine tie is better, but that's not an option. Any guess as to a range of dollar value - I'm located in Washington state. Any particular strong or weak points? My use would be to bale grass hay on a small scale - several cuttings a year, less than 10 acres. I'd pull it with my MF35 diesel - around 38 hp...is that adequate? Where do I look for a manual? Are parts readily available? How is it for upkeep? Thanks!

Craig and Scott...

Thanks for the replies. That's a start on learning a little about that baler. In fact, this one is also offered free by a generous friend. He's also a trustworthy friend and one who takes care of his equipment, so it's likely a no-lose deal. Mainly, I just wanted to learn a little. It's helpful to know what it might sell for.

I think they were made between '54 and '62. I have an early 214T (twine) baler that runs pretty well behind a John Deere 2240 (50hp). 38 horses ought to do just fine.
I bought a manual from John Deere for about 12 bucks. I have also bought parts from the dealer.
I'm not sure what they're worth. Mine was free, but there is one down here at the dealer for $650.

I have a 214T, (don't know about the wire). Mine works just great. I got my manuel for the local JD Dealer. Your tractor should work the baler just fine. I use a Ford 850, it has a little more HP (48) but I have used a Farmal B, it will pull the baler, or stationary bale but wont do both. 38 HP would work.
