Which is the best older combine--JD 4400 or IH 1460

I'm new to the whole farming scene and I have about 80 acres of corn that I'll want to harvest.

I've seen lots of older combines that look pretty good but I'm not sure which models are better than others. Combines in my price range are the John Deere 4400 and 6600 and the IH 715 and 1460.

Any recommendations?
What are the drawbacks/shortcomings of these machines?

The 1460 is going to be alot more and better combine than the others you listed. We have an '83 1460 and will harvest 1,600 acres of corn and beans with it this fall. Parts are readily available and the Axial Flow combines are about as easy to work on as a combine can be. For 80 acres you might want to look into hiring it done. Should be able to hire it done for about $22/acre which wouldn't come close to making a payment on a combine and it is all tax deductable. Older combines can be expensive to maintain even for a small amount like yours.

15 series IH had a burning problem due to an oil hose routed too near the engine. Check with your insurance company to see if they will cover those models. Early 4400s (gas) were underpowered, and before '74 with the rotary screen, had overheating and cooling problems. 6600 is built much heavier throughout, but gas models could easily burn 7-9 gallons per hour.Wide range of capacity among those you cited.
