Why not invest in a three wheel rake on a 3 point hitch. They are easier to manuvere, no chain or drive shaft to break , or flat tires. I can't get teeth for the old deering I have and had to make do with single prongs.

Well, $10 'here' for a steel-wheeled, 4 wheel rake, & $1000 or so for a mint NH 256. That gives you a wide range! :)

Around here the most popular are NH or JD 5-bar 2-wheel rakes. They bring $300-1000 depending on condition & model. They do a good job.

The 4-wheel steel rakes will rake hay, & are cheap. The negatives are they probably have less bars (slower, don't rake as clean) and you can't back up with them worth a darn, you can't transport down the road very well. Just not nearly as manuverable for small & odd size places.

Other brands of 2-wheel rakes bring $50 - 300, and work pretty well.

You need to inspect the drive mechanism on any of these, to make sure it is not worn, & all there. Some little cogs & pieces & shafts can be worn & cause problems.

Any old rake for $25 or less that works should get you started, you might be real happy if you find a NH 56 or equivelent for $250-350. That is 'here', might be different 'there'.

Going rate in w. Maryland is about $450-500 for a well-worn but still usable one.
