HELP!!!! Does anyone know anything about a 456 New Idea Round Baler. I have one and it make some of the nicest bales I have ever seen. But it is a very hard pull on the tractor and makes lots of little noises. I have found that 2 of the bearings are bad and most of the belts need replacing. It is in ruff shape. The dealership will allow me 4,500 on trade in for it. But I still will have to come up with 4,500 more dollers to get the round baler I like. Should I run her till she explodes or trade her now. Either way I think Im gonna loose money. Any advice will be good. Thanks Brad

Brad,
I'd run her till she blows. Or you can do like most farmers I know. Insure it heavily and hope it burns up,LOL. Then she won't own you anything and it will give it's life for a replacement.

I say spend some money to fix it or trade it. Believe me. They will catch on fire just like everyone here said. Mine did last weekend. Luckily I caught it before the actual blaze got going. Just like everyone else said, bearing went out.
Question, if you're getting a $4500 trade in value and have to have $4500 more, is this a new baler you will be trading for? If so, what brand and model number is it? That would be a $9000 baler and I'm curious what it is. The chepest I've priced lately is a Hesston 830 for $9850, Hesston 840 for $12850, New Holland 638 for $11867, Vermeer 5400 Rebel for $12700 and a left over Vermeer 504L (new) for $12900.

Fix the bearings, or trade. You don't want a fire, & that's what I hear bad bearings in a baler cause.

When things like balers blow up, they tend to completely destroy themselves (or at least to the extent that it costs more to fix than worth, and that's about the same thing). So, if you run it to that point, even if you do no other damage, you've got a zero trade in value, or very nearly so. Granted, the dealer is probably over-allowing on the trade to get his baler sold to you, but could you buy it for $4,500 cash? If it would be more, you're better off trading now, while your unit still has some value.

Just my opinion: Running a baler you know is in bad shape is not a good idea. Almost every time a baler catches fire it is because of a bad bearing heating up and catching hay on fire. If you have a fire, you risk loosing your tractor, hay in the baler, nearby hay, and starting a grass fire that could go who knows where. I see what you mean about being in a lose-lose situation, but think what could go wrong and then what you'd have to buy! Just my two cents.
