I have a 6 foot king Cutter Rotory Cutter with a 3 point hitch conntection. It works great, but my land is slightly hilly and I have scalped a spot here and there. I am thinking about adding some wheels to the front of the cutter to help avoid this. Similar to the anti-scalping wheels on the front of a riding movers deck. They would contact the ground, only to push the mover up.

Has anyone tried to do this before? Is there some reason I am not presently aware of that make this a bad idea? I do not see why the manufactures did not include these wheels in the first place. I would really apprecate your input, I am new to tractor implements.

Don't worry, after a few trips over your field, your rotary cutter will have all the high spots trimmed down!! :) Long ago, when Land Pride started selling their cutters, a lot of their models came with wheels all the way around!! I added a set of "front" wheels to my smaller Woods rotary cutter years ago. They work pretty good, but don't stop scalping 100%. The wheels were a option Woods offered for their 5' finish mowers before every one started putting them on at the factory. I had bought, and installed them on a 3 point finish mower i use to have, and robbed them back off when i sold it. Robert

I am going to add the wheels this winter. I had a feeling it was to do with cost why they were not offered. Thanks for the response. I will will have to post a picture when the modification is done.

Instead of going to the trouble of putting wheels on your mower, why dont u just raise the 3 pt hitch up when u come to a high spot, then when the mower has passes it just lower it back down to your regular cutting height..

I wish I was that good to always do that. Unfortunatly I am not so I need a scalper safty device of some sort. I really do not think adding the wheels will be that difficult.
