When I bought my baler, the guy threw in two balls of Bridon twine and said it was the best. Told me never to use anything else. I'd like to know what the rest of you more experience people think.

I agree with the sisal twine, dam poly twine stuff ends up polluting the farm.My IH37 works well with sisal. Poly twine ends up around axels and what have you and never rots. I hate the poly stuff for that reason. My opinion.

I use a product called "THE ORANGELINE" BT130 in my JD337. It works well, ties just great, and is bright orange to assist in policing up all of the strings. We feed hay to Horses. I suppose if someone's idea of feeding small square bales involved pushing whole bales off of a moving wagon, to cattle, then the strings might become a problem. We distribute the hay flakes, one at a time, trying to space them far enough apart so that all of the horses get access. The strings never get thrown on the ground and never picked up, so they are never a problem. If a string does fall on the ground, it's bright orange, easy to spot, and we pick them up.

We use Bridon Cordage Poly Twine, 9,600 170lb. We have real good luck with this in our 276 New Holland, but with any baler the twine is only as good as the knotter. Keep that in shape will save a world of headaches in the field

Hi Jim,

could i talk you out of using the plastic stuff?

i guess its ok for feeding a few bales to a horse or two, but if you are not carefull the stuff will end up polluting your farm. it will never go away except to be collected by other equipment as Burrhead has already pointed out.

you nay have to store your hay more carefully with sissal, but after all the hard work involved with harvesting hay, its worth it.

sissal=quality hay, plastic=moist hay.

now nobody get excited, just my 2 pennies worth.

Guess I have to "respectfully disagree", at least in the market I normally work in. Plastic (or wire) here says "professional grower" on square bales.
Three reasons:
Stack wagons break about 3 times as many sisal strings as plastic (wire scratches the paint up), sisal means more rodent damage in storage (Equine Mkt really frowns on rodent droppings due to EPM and salmonella) and also sisal means that bottem bales will have twine rot off, (most of my neighbors that are as serious about forages as I am keep cows to market the forage they can't sell) with plastic I don't waste those 15 bales out of every stack, plastic can be set as tight as wire, sisal can't. The tighter the bale the better it hauls.

yeah,i knew i was going to raise some heckles with that.

and i'm not trying to be absolute with this, its somewhat a perception thing.

why do most people use poly? well the answer in my area is that they don't want to deal with bales that the sissal has rotted and fallen apart.

so if i see a bale of hay tied with sisal, i pretty much know that the bale was harvested transported, and stored under dry conditions. True? if i see poly, i'm thinking (i know itsa dangerous hobby for me) maybe moist conditions.

same with round, a week on the ground with sissal, and it rotts. if its not stored in a well protected area, it rotts. again round bale in sissal, good conditions, poly, no gaurantee.

listen, normally i would argue all day and night about the moral and ethical advantages of sissal over poly (i've had several emails on the topic already) but i've already had it out with VDOT, Building inspectors, and neighbors over trash and property lines so i've had about all the fun i want for 24 hours. tomarrow, maybe i'll spit more sparks.

We use it because the sisal twine supply around here is garbage. . . . small squares are always stored inside where I live. I would use sisal, but can't get consistently good results with any of the 3 brands available (including New Holland) lately.

Hi Tim,

i have heard of that problem, at this site i think. i have to admit that with round bales, tensile strength is not so critical. this was to be the year i was to square bale again for resale. but with last fall and this years extreamly low rain fall, that will not happen for another 3 years.

if manufactures of sisal twine let their quality fall, then they will lose market share. i guess we could see the day that its not available. i hope that does not happen. the wine industrie is having a simular discussion about cork vs plastic stoppers.

Well, the thing is, my "farm" consists of exactly 2 acres....and .5 of that is my house and yard. All the hay I bale goes to my sister who "just feeds it to a couple of horses". I've been told that having a horse ingest sisal twine isn't a good thing and while I don't really care much what happens to my sister's horses, she does and it would keep much more peace in the extended family if that didn't happen.

Also, I've not found anyone locally that uses anything but plastic twine. I don't know the reason for that, but it makes poly twine a lot easier to find.

i expect in ways a two acre farm is as much trouble as a larger one. and i know what you mean about the peace in the family thing. if anything happen to the horse, you may never hear the end of it.

Jim, I am running an old Massey#10 and we have always used a sisal twine..brand isn't so important.. a friend of mine brought me two balls of plastic twine and after baling a few hundred bales of straw we stopped and changed back to our sisal twine..nothing but trouble with the plastic..didn't want to hurt my friend's feelings because his company sells the stuff but it just doesn't tie in our old baler..Mike in Exeter Ontario

I use all sissal myself. I tried the poly twine and ended up throwing 2 almost new rolls back in the shed and used them to tie tarps down with.

I never saw and old square baler that would do good with poly twine.

Our JD 14T did fine with it. Matter of fact, it did better with 9600 plastic than it ever did with the sisal. The 336 worked fine with either one. The Hesston 4550 can bale with 7200 in either type, but I have no need to go that heavy.

Hello Tim. I hope you had your fingers crossed when you said that.

I use sissal on round bales too. The poly twine left overs sure kill the seals in a brush hog come spring.

Got a suggestion for ya on the leftovers, just cut all the twine off the round bales when you feed it and you won't have that problem.

That's the way I've always done it but there aint no way to get all the twine off at feeding time.

I guess using off the ground feeders would keep it out of the bushhog but then you have hardware disease in the cattle.

I hope I didn't offend with that last post, was not meant too in any way. I always do a pretty good job of gettin all the twine off mine without much problems, of course you always are going to have a stray piece of twine here and there. I just sit my bale down and cut all the twines and pull each one out. Works pretty good for me. I guess it depends alot on how many head you have trying to get at it too. I have a small herd now but am working on building them up.

I would not use poly on small squares. Too much mess. I do on the round bales, as they are stored outside.

No offense taken, but when the wind is blowing, it's 5 below, I sometimes miss a twine ot 2.... I use a utility knife, cut the strings on one side, tie together (while on my 'forklift' style 3-point bale mover) throw the twines over the top, place the loop created on the upper link pin, and most come off when I set the bale & flip it on end. Depending on the mood of the cattle, my mood, & the weather, I still will miss a strand or 2...

I'm glad everything is cool, maybe I shouldn't put it that way! It doesn't get to awfull cold here in north central Texas so that may account for some of the twine removal woes!
It can be a royal pain too deal with thats for sure.

Naw I was'nt offended and hope I did'nt offend either.

I pick the bales up and roll all the string I can find off the bales but still end up with enough on the ground to get the bushhog seals ever year if any of us use poly.

They claim this poly is bio-degradable but some of it has been in a rented pasture for over 10 years and still has'nt degraded. I know it's over 10 years cause I've had it leased that long and have never used poly hay in it.

I sold down now but I usually run around 100-125 pair.

One point about doing all the poly collecting at feeding time is that it's just too danged much work especially in the rain and wind.

Glad everything is cool! It is a pain to deal with twine especially when the weather is bad. We don't have to much problem here in north central Texas adn I try to watch the weather pretty close and if I catch it before it hits I will put out extra before it gets bad, I have been muddin with the 3020 though! Its a royal pain to get twine off when ice is on the bales.

To get all the twin off just cut the twine at one end and then stand behind the roll, and unwrapped the twine, when your done u have the whole length of twine in your hand that u can just ball up and throw away, if u go and cut each individual string down along side of the bale, then u will have problems of not getting all the twine.

I store outside, so some of the bales get the twine sunk in pretty good, or pushed in on the bottom. In addition, with 20-30" of snow/ice, zero temperatures, it gets pretty difficult (impossible???) for me to get any twine off your way. You must have a bale spike??? I have a forklift-type, so can't do that from the get-go anyhow.

One of the neighbor's balers would wrap at least a 1/2 turn of twine under the hay, that one tends to break off in frozen hay no matter what you do...
