Sickle sections and guards on JD #5

I am slowly getting my #5 sickle mower ready to use. Most of the knife sections and guards are good, but I need to replace a few. Are the knife sections just a common JD sections or are they a special one, what about the guards? The reason I ask is that a friend has a bunch of sections and guards from a 95 combine and he wants to get rid of them.

Thanks,
Bob G

I recently purchased single guards for my mower at the local Bomgaars store (like TSC and country general). The only difference I seen was the paint, mine are black and JD are yellow, I bought 3 for the price of 1 JD and they have the same part number casted in the same place, with the replaceable knife/blade. And I've seen combine/windrower guards used on them also, use what you like. chris

The guards from a 95 combine will not work on a #5 mower. The guards on a #5 are single. The guard on a 95 combine are 2 or 3 together.

Check his sections against yours. If they measure the same, give it a try. You have to watch as some are under serrated and some top serrated. JD still sells them. Good luck.

I have found that the biggest thing to watch is that the sickle "rides" the same on each of the gaurds. There is nothing wrong with the ones that tsc or bomgaars sells as long as they match up the save as the others. for what it is worth I prfer the under serated sickle.
