Can anyone recommend a small square baler for use with an old model ford 2000 gas tractor. I think the tractor is about 30 HP and I want to bale about 1000 bales per year (bermuda grass). I am also interested in recommendations regarding sickle mowers or other cutting equipment for use with this tractor. Thanks in advance, Joe

Here is a combination I use with a small Massey Ferguson 50 tractor:

1) Ford 501 3pt hitch sickle bar mower.
2) Hew Holland Model 97 Hay Rake (PTO driven)
3) New Holland 273 Square Baler (2 twine bales)

All parts are readily available, and the equipment is tried and true. The prices vary due to location and seasonal use, but the prices I have seen are as follows:
1) Ford 501 sickle Bar mower around $475
2) New Holland Hay rake in good repair: $750
3) New Holland 273 Square Baler in excellent conddition: $1,500.

Condition is the most important! Look for rust on the baler from former lazy owner(s).

Hope this helps!

My advice is to buy a model that parts can be obtained easily and one that you can "time" easily.
If you buy a used one, get the owner to demonstrate it. Don't buy a used one that is used up! Look for wear on the knotters especially and the machine in general. Parts for balers don't come cheap - check the dealer for knotter component prices and then decide.

Have you considered someone baling for hire?

Joe:

I've got an 8N, so slightly less HP than yours. I've used a MF 10 with no problem coming from the tractor, although I can't recommend the baler because it was difficult to get parts. If/when I go back to baling (I put up a few tons of loose hay a year) I will get a New Holland, somewhere around a model 66-69. Parts are readily available, and they have good reputations.

I use a Ford 515 sicklebar mower and love it. Operator's manual (you do need one) is availble from New Holland and so far so have any parts I've needed and they haven't been too pricey either. My mower cost me about $400, and I've replaced two knife sections (it won't cut rocks very well) and a drive belt in the 3 years I've used it...not bad for a 40 year old machine.

good luck,
Tom

I'm struggling with the baler question myself. However, I use a JD #9 sickle mower with my Ford 850 and I quite like it. It's a fully mounted 3 pt mower (no trail wheel). I have not had any trouble finding parts at the JD dealer so far. I don't see a lot of these for sale, but when I do they seem to range from $150 to $500 depending on how proud the seller is of it. I got mine for free from a relative. That's the only mower I have any experience with. I'm sure there are others that would work fine with your 2000.

Ive never owned anything but one bailer in my life 55, and that a 1960 Case 140 W meaning wire. I hope your in twine country as wire is murder on the fingers. One thing I can tell you though, is JD is probably the best for getting parts for their equipment. Your tractor should be able to easily handle any square bailer made. Stay away from engine bailers, you dont need them. That is what ine is. I have it because I pull it with a 1934 CC Caase and a 1937 Farmall F-30. None of those tractors have a varible clutch. Yours does. Any size sickle mower can be used with your tractor along with rake.
