I recently aquired a 7 foot JD sickle bar mower. It is chain driven through two gear boxes. It is very good condition wise. I am told that it is a #5 but can not find a model number on it. How are these mowers identified?
Thanks for any help.

#5 mower looked almost home-made... triangular frame made out of ANGLE IRON... this was replaced by #8 mower, which had a more refined look to it... CHANNEL IRON frame. #5 mower has ratchet slip-clutch in the open, in PTO shaft next to chaincase. #8 mower has slip-clutch enclosed in rear upper part of chaincase. When you hit obstacle with #5 mower, 1 side of whole frame releases, and swings back. On #8, the safety trip releases only the cutter bar. Feel free to email if I can be of any more help.

Dave,

I have had a #5 for a few years. It was a rusty piece of scrap metal when I bought it but I've got it up in pretty good shape, including new paint. It works like a new one. The site that Jerry was talking about was www.retiredtractors.com

Let us know if you need any help getting your mower working.

Mark

The numbers on some cast parts will help do that. I know that a #5 will have the single wheel on the back end and were originally built to have two attachment points (via bolts to L shaped pieces) on the tractor. I believe the others attach differently or have different bar lengths. I think there is a site maybe called Rummey's that has a pic of one working. There might be one in the implement photos here too.

The No.5 mower used a pto driven cast iron gear case bolted into the mower frame, this is about 26>?inches long, the pitman arm is driven by a cast steel flywheel off the bottom of this gear case. The gear case is filled with oil. Made them rather unique among old mowers. john in ne.
