Woods or BushHog? Light or Medium Duty?

I'm planning to buy a brush cutter. I have found both Woods and BushHog at local dealers. I'm planning to get a slip-clutch model rather than a shear-bolt model. I don't expect to do much heavy cutting. Mainly weeds, thorns, some 1/2 inch sapplings.

Which brand would you recommend? Would you recommend the light or medium duty?

I'll be pulling this with an Oliver 1800.

Thanks.

I'd recommend the Bush Hog. Similar to an earlier posting I purchased a Bush Hog model 3008 pull type cutter. I've been very happy with it. It seems to be a sturdy, well made machine. It makes pasture maintenance much easier. I'd been using a Howse 6 foot 3 point model, and was not happy with it at all. I have no regrets about getting rid of the Howse and going with the Bush Hog.

The 1800 is a pretty big machine. I use a IH1066 so have bought an 8' 3ph mounted cutter. You don't say what size or how it will be pulled. I looked at the Woods as they have a good rep but was unimpressed with the dealer. Thought to muyself here I am shelling out big bux(to me) on a cutter and this guy doesn't really care. Went to 2 different bush hog dealers and a Servis/Rhino dealer. I ended up buying a BushHog 3008 and I will bet my son will be useing it when I'm dead and gone. Very heavy duty, it has three gear boxes and they are big. You couldn't give me any implement with a shear pin. I also went back to the same dealer looking for a post hole digger. Wasn't treated as well this time and ended up going to the dealer in the next town the other way and got a Bush Hog post hole digger with hydraulic down force for less than I was quoted for one without at the first dealer. Needless to say where I'll buy my parts. Check out the link. Good Luck in your search. I paid about $3500 for it.

Ever been in the situation where you say "I wish I would have...". It is better to get the heavier duty mower now, than regret it later. My 30 year-old Continental brush cutter will take out 3 inch stumps that I wouldn't dare touch with my newer Woods unit. My 2 cents....Good Luck!

Don't know about where you are but I priced them both at the same dealer and a 2615L (medium duty) Bushhog was a little under $9000.00 new and the light duty woods was $9900 with a medium duty almost 11,000. GOt the Bushhog and it's been great. I like their hitches better, I've probably welded 2 dozen Woods hitches back together.

I've got a Woods, but it's six of one and a half dozen of the other with Woods and BushHog, last time I checked.

Spend the extra money and go with the Medium duty. The light ones are okay for grass, but you start cutting any woody stuff and they'll pound themselves to death in pretty short order. As LH said, the thickness of the metal in the deck is the key. The most common failure on rotary cutters is stress cracks in the deck, particularly around the gearbox mounting area. Look for heavy components and good reinforcement in that area.

Was priceing them yesterday.
For a hundred bucks more, the Woods is the way to go.

For a big tractor like the 1800 I'd go with a heavy duty deck. find out which compnay (both are good) makes the heaviest gauge deck and go with that.
