Has anyone used plastic twine for a 24T baler. And if so what size 9000 or 10000? Did it work better than sisal?

Thanks
grainbuyer

I switched from 10,000 sisal to 9000 plastic about 4 years ago on a 336 (very similar knotter). Didn't change any of the adjustments. Still misses the first 2 bales of the season and about one every 400, just like it did since it was new. I can live with that.

I do not get it, but that is not unusual. I had a JD 224T, and am told it is the same knotter. We use both plastic and sisal twine. Seems that tension was increased on twine discs a little when we started with plastic; other than that no changes were made. If the needles are adjusted to bring the twine close enough to the billhooks to make the knot there should be no problems.

The problem I had when using plastic was that the gap in the billhook wasn't small enough to hold the ends of the string, not pulling the knot tight enough to stay tied when it released. A less worn or different model would probably make all the difference in the world. A gap only .025" smaller could be all it takes. I switched to the 170lb. plastic and it works great.

I think you'd better check with a JD dealer because an older baler may not have the correct bill-hooks to handle plastic. I've used plastic since 1972 but my NH 268 had to have the bill-hooks changed in order to handle plastic. The newer balers will handle both types , however , the newer plastic twine is sized closer to sisal and the older balers might just handle it.

I use plastic string in the 14T , it tends to cut half way through sisal twine by the knot.made nearly 2000 bales this summer and broke 10 I blame on the baler.

I switch from string to plastic about 10 years ago and would not go back. I use 170 not strength plastic. I comes in 9600 to a box. The new released type comes in 7200 single rolls. They make 140 knot strength also you can find this in any farm store. The 170 knot you won't find in stores very often. I also sell it if you need to try it. I run it in 327 Jd baler with excellent results and did no adjusting other than put on new set of knifes in knotters. You should find the plastic will be cheaper in price also. Where are you located. Let me know if I can be more help. 327jd baler is for sale.
