Ready to ditch my MF baler

It started in June with the first cut. Never got a single good bale out of it. Turned out the left bill hook was broken. New one was big bucks. Paid half that for a used one (still too much money). Second cut has been a nightmare. Now both knotters are missing knots and hanging up on the bill hook. I read the manual and try the adjustments suggested there....no go. Finally broke the bolt that holds the twine knife so it's done for now. Had to ask the neighbor to finish baling for me. Luckily he owed me a favor (I loaned him a hay rake last month when the wind obliterated all his windrows). He has an old New Holland and I was impressed with how easy that NH made it look. Problem is I don't have enough ground to justify spending $$$ to replace a baler. I'll work on removing the broken bolt and try again to get the adjustments right before it's time to bale again. Meanwhile the neighbor has an old blue Ford baler that I could maybe get for free. They don't use it anymore because it's "temperamental.....misses a knot once in awhile". Once in awhile I could deal with.

It took me awhile to figure out your question. My mind doesn't normally think along those lines, but the other possibility for "MF" does seem to apply!

I know you are getting lots of good advice and suggestions about what kind of baler should replace your MF. I can only add my 2 cents that a John Deere is one to avoid. Lots of people seem to think they are good but my personal experience with a 14T was not good at all, and we bought it new. In the 5 years we owned that machine it never made 100 straight without missing a tie, and consistently missed 2 or 3 in every hundred bales, despite a dealer machanic who spent lots and lots of time in the field with us, trying to figure it out. We finally gave up and sold it, but I can tell you we envied those farmers baling with IH or New Holland balers. I'm not being critical of others who have had good luck with their JD's but I know from personal experience they have more than their fair share of problems with knotters. I suggest you think about retaining what you already have and work on adjustments. I'll bet it is something simple or a worn part if you can locate it.

Mine is also a 124 and I have had very little trouble with it until this year. I'm sure there is a simple adjustment that I'm missing. I'll keep trying because I sure can't afford another baler right now.

Jim you didn't say which type of baler it was. I have a MF #3 baler and i bought it 4 years ago and it also wouldn't tie. after hours of headache my father suggested i run the baler in slow motion with the fly wheel. I tried this and found out that the sweep that pushes the twine to the bill hook was out of adjustment. I made the adjustment and within a few minutes i was making bales. This year i did 1438 bales with only one miss. So far its been very good and i usually only miss a couple all year. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!

My baler is a MF 124. I've heard and read the suggestion of watching the knotter operation while turning the baler by hand at the flywheel. The only problem is the flywheel is at the front of the baler and from there I can't see what's happening at the knotter. Even if I could see the knotter (ie, find someone to help by turning the flywheel while I watch) I wouldn't know what to look for.

Jim:

I had a MF #10 that did the same thing. Found another a mile up the road, shed kept by a guy with a reputation for good care of his equipment. I bought that one and decided to use the old one as a parts supply. Within a few months I'd run through all the "spare" knotter hooks and probably hadn't made a hundred good bales. Sold them both "as is" to guys who were going to use them for parts or else try to rebuild. I wish them luck, but I'll never buy another...my neighbor/mentor says NH is the only baler to buy, and I think I'll listen to him this time.

While I wont argue that a NH is a quality baler, they are NOT the only baler to buy! As it happens, JOHN DEERE makes wonderful balers also, so whether it's an old 14t or 24t, or perhaps a newer 336.337 or 338 series, they are ALL good balers with excellent dealer parts support.

Balers to avoid include IH, FORD, AC, OLIVER, and MF!

Jim:
I don't think my neighbor was badmouthing Deere balers, his advice was really related in large part to the quality of our local dealers, too.

Our NH dealer is a great place--good parts availability, great service etc. The local Deere dealer (and the MF dealer, too) are all cruddy--can't get the right parts, no service, can't fix anything, too busy, understaffed.

So I think my neighbor's advice is smart: find the local "best" dealer and then look seriously that brand...if it is Deere in one area, buy Deere; if NH, buy NH. 'Cuz sooner or later you will need parts and service.

That's right Jim. The membership is still open. Better join now before the rush. I got my blue baler figured out this summer and it has not missed a tie since. Keep the baler, tune it up and enjoy the fact that since nobody wants a blue baler you can get the job done without emptying your pockets in the process. Parts are pricey through your local NH dealer but I bought a complete parts baler this spring for $125. Good Luck.
