Can anyone tell me about a Vermeer 605H round baler? Found one at a used tractor dealer. Guy wants $3500 for it. Good metal with some rust on surface. Nothing cleaning up and paint won't fix. Alot of bearing have been changed. They're silver instead of the Vermeer yellow. Tires have been changed. Had car tires on it. Uniroyal white letter tires to be exact. Noticed there was a hydraulic cylinder on it somewhere, not sure exactly what it did now, but the cylinder rod had rust on it. The baler looked like it had seen some pretty hard days. I'll have to stop by and give this thing a real good going over. Any comments on what to look for?
Unsure about this one but at the same time, unsure how far $3500 will go for a round baler around Houston? This baler has been at that dealer's place for quite a while. You could tell it had been sitting there for quite a while because it looked like half of the tire height was buried.
Comments on the 605? If I understand the open / closed throat thing, this on should be a open (I think). Thanks everyone.

I had a 605H Vermeer baler. They are good balers. But like all used equipment it depends on maintenance and the amount of use. A set of belts is around $2000. From your discription it sounds like that baler has had a lot of use. I am also curious why it has car tires on it. Most balers of that generation came with implement tires which last almost the life of the baler. This spring I sold my 605H for $4250. It had new belts two years ago, new bearings last winter and was always sheded. In my opinion the worst thing you can do is let a baler sit outside.

Vermeer balers are good balers. It would be an open throat which is the only kind to have, thats my opinion. If it has had that many bearings changed it has baled a lot of hay and probably sat out in the weather.Look at the belts to see if they ragged or in good shape cost a lot to change them.Look at the pto slip joint on the drive shaft see how much slack it has in a forward backward motion.Look at the gear box see if any grass has wrapped around the input shaft and eat up the seal. The big roller chain on the left side check for wear in the chain and sprockets they are high to. 3500 is not a bad price if in decent shape. Look it over, ken.

Mike, Also check the pickup teeth and bearings on the shafts they ride on. Often a neglected area for grease as it is hard to get to.

pay close attention to the gear box & slip joints.if the gear box is leaking & no hay wrapped around the shafts chances are the gears have excessive wear along with bad bearings.if so stay away as it costs more to go through the gear box as baler is worth.other wise with good maintenance one great baler.
