I'm planning to buy a 3-pt. brush mower to pull with my Oliver 1800. I know very little about brands, models, pro's & con's, etc.

Any suggestions? How much can I expect to pay for a decent one?

I have heard that buying used is risky as the gearbox often gets messed up.

Thanks.

Hello,

The 1800 is a pretty big machine to go mowing with. But look who's talking as I use a IH 1066 and a BushHog 3008 mower. It is 8' wide has three gear boxes and plenty heavy duty. It was quite expensive at $3500, but I figured it would be the only one I'd ever buy. The only thing I wish I'd opted for is a chain gaurd for the rear. The gaurd on there gets bent when I back into the underbrush and hit stumps the previous owner failed to cut off short enough. Email me with any specific questions. Let us know how you make out.

Chuck,
Jerry gave some good advice about the slip clutch and also the Woods. There are some other brands also such as Bush Hog or Rhino. I would look around your area and see what your dealers carry and then post those brands up here and see what everyone has to say about them. I'm just thinking about parts and such. Jerry was also right about deciding what the mower will be used for as there are different mowers for different duties (brush cutting vs. grass cutting).
Good luck.

I've had good luck with Woods brand mowers. If you don't plan on mowing heavy grass or brush, then you might consider one of their light weight models, otherwise, I would go with their mid to heavy weight mowers. What ever brand you buy, spend the extra dollars and get the slip clutch rather than the shear bolt protection.
