An old converted from horse-drawn spreader was on the property when we moved in. Used it for two years, then the bottom gave way. (I'm a complete novice/city kid so please be kind!)

After putting in an all new floor, and painting the frame, wheels and sides--matching the paint flakes--I'm interested in determining the age and would appreciate any help, like where to look on it for identifying marks or a source.

It had whitish wheels, really red (not brick/barn red)body and blueish green frame/appliances. All wood wagon body, with "International" painted on the side (Not decals) in black. The Univ. of Wisconsin McCormick Archive had a picture of an ad poster for a McCormick from about 1915 that looks a lot like it, except the spiral scooper was mounted way at the back with the raking spindles top and bottom. Mine has the spiral at the top under a frame and a single rake thing at the back edge of the wood. All iron apron and conveyor.

Any ideas/suggestions would be welcome.

McCormick-Deering No.4A spreader. year is approx. 1937. From the book, '150 years of International Harvester" page 204. Looks like the restoration is coming along nicely...Good luck with it...Tom-Pa

Thanks so much for the information. That timing is about right for some of the expansion building on this old place. I'll have to get a hold of that IH book if I can.

Gloria,

Do you have a casting number handy from off the main drive gear or any of the other gears? I can then go into my manuals and narrow down what you may have.

My 2 bits worth,

Old Iron

Dear Old Iron--

Yes, I just looked. The casting number on the tongue steering piece is 718S.

The big main drive gear has 3014S on the inside (back) of the gear.

The smaller gear on the other side has 30 10S stamped in the metal. All have an I H in a circle so I figure they're all International parts.

Since "S" figures in every number I found, do I assume that S means Spreader?

Thanks for any looking you're able to do.
