A NH will outcut a JD any day of the week. NH 489 are a good older 9 ft conditioner. The 492 replaced the 489 and had several improvements over the 489.

Hi, The JD 1219 or earlier version 1209 are good sickle bar MoCo. I have a JD 1217 ( 7 ft) and JD 1219 (9 ft ), I like the 1219 better. Both MoCo I bought , needed the sickle bars rebuilt, which makes a big difference in how they cut. Bill

Bill, I have a JD1209 and it does cut shaggy, clogs on the far side more than I would like. You mentioned a sickle rebuild. How far do you go in to the rebuild? I have a brand new 9ft cutter section in it now. I have replaced 2 or 3 gaurds. I suppose all need replacing. I hope to get 5 more years out of it and call it quits. I only mow 40 acres per year.

Nellie - Replace all your guards at the same time as you replace your knife. The guards will actually wear faster than the knife. You won't believe the difference after replacing both knife and guards. Incidently , this is also the most over-looked area in combines as well.
As for the best haybine, my 479 NH purchased in 1972 is still doing a great job. Changed one drive belt and regularily maintain cutter bar.

Any NH beats a JD of the same era- when new. Individual units will vary according to the use/abuse they have been given, but the JDs I've seen do not do as good a job of cutting as the NH. Too often a shaggy cut. (1209, etc.) Had a new NH 489? many years ago, and it did an excellent job. Now- disc mowers beat any sickle mower- less maintenance, excellent for point rows and merging windrows- they don't plug! Annihilate gopher mounds.
