Alright, as some of you might know, I'm now on a quest to find a good used baler that won't break my wallet. I went to look at a couple of JD 336's and they both looked like they had had the guts ran out of them. But I did come across 3 other balers. An almost new NH 565 for $6800. It doesn't even have the paint wore off the bale chute or chamber. It's more than I'm looking to spend, but it is a great looking baler that's only about 3 years old. I also found a NH 311 hayliner for $4200. It looked in good shape but I don't really know anything about them. When were they made and are they any good? Is it worth that much? And finally, I found an older NH super 68. I didn't get a price on it becuase they were closed, but it seemed to be in good shape. The knotter looked clean as did the pick-up and chamber. But how old is this thing? Were they any good? And what would be a reasonable price for it. It had been repainted, but it still looked to be in good mechanical shape. Sorry for the long post, but this is getting to be a real headache. Thanks for the help. Casey

Hey Casey, We bought a NH 68 Super Hayliner last spring for $165.00 Was a private guy selling it not a dealer. It is in good shape. Made about 1500 bales last year with no problems. They are very good balers.

This is just an update. The dealer wants $1300 for the super 68. Seems kinda high for a baler that old, but he also offered me a ford 309 two row corn planter for $600 and a new idea 1 row picker for $2500. He might take $4000 for the lot of it, but I'm not sure. The 68 did seem to be in real good shape, I'm going to go look at it again on Monday to be sure. I'm only looking to take care of about 1500 bales this year and maybe up to 2500 next. I know the other balers are much better balers, especially the 565, but it's just starnge to pay that much for just a baler when I could pay less and get the corn equipment that I need as well. Maybe the 565 is the best way to go, I'm going to think on it over the weekend, Thanks for all the help. Casey

How many corn pickers you want?

Yea, don't see many 1-row pickers here in MN, they all went to the junk yard. The 2-row wide models go for $200 or so, the newest models maybe $2000 if you find 2 guys who _really_ want it. Can't imagine paying that for a 1-row model.

I dunno, I watched some people bid up a JD 24T to some 1500 bucks last weekend. Thing looked like it had been bombed. That would be roughly comparable to a S68.

If you are going to be putting up 3 or 4 thousand bales a year, one of the newer ones might save you money and aggravation in the not-so-very long run. If you're like us and put up a few hundred for the horses, then maybe saving the bucks is worth it. Parts should be readily available for all of them.

Casey Good advice form the 2 Tims. My NH268 works like a charm and cost us $625. My haying partner uses a super 68 and other than maintence he has had no troubles. The 311 is a fine peice of equipement and will last a small operation a life time if properly maintained. No easy answers other than don't be in a rush, keep a close eye on the classifieds and stay away from IH420's Happy Hunting Roy

I have a friend who has a NH 311 and he likes it. I have run it too, it's a good baler. You just have to make sure to keep the twine knives sharp and the knotters clean. Only thing I didn't like was the the way the pickup raises and lowers. NH's system for this on the 311 was in my opinion (for lack of a better term)half-assed. The S68 is up in years, and although they were good balers for their time, the older they get, the crankier they get. The 565 would be great, if you wanted to spend that much money. A 311 here goes for between $3500 and $5000, depending on what it's got and what it looks like.

I have a NH268, which is the next newer model to the 68, that I paid $900 for, and its just fine. I make about 2000 bales/year with no trouble. For their time, I think they were the best. Be careful of one that was repainted, a paint job can cover a multitude of sins. Look for general signs of abuse. Email if you'd like to discuss it further.
