I picked up an old set of discs from a friend that has 1 of the 4 sets of discs missing. I plan on using only the front 2 sets, by cutting off the tongue and welding on a bracket to make it Cat 1, 3-point hitch compatible. I wanted something I can lift up when I get into wet soil and get bogged down, plus be able to transport around without having to just drag them behind me. Will the 2 sets (just the front row) be enough to do the job ?

Athens used to make real large disks like you describe. Around here we called them Bog Harrows.
Pull type-not 3-point.

Like the other posts say, if you really want to cut soil good and fill in the center of your last pass, you have to overlap 1/2 the width.

Years ago, all we had was single gang disks- like you describe. If one pass doesn't do it, just go over the field again, at an angle to the first pass (like 45 degree, not 90). Sod would always take two passes- or do "double disking"- Run the tractor center over the edge of the last pass- resulting in double coverage of the entire field in one direction.

I did just that with an old wreck of a disk I bought with a bunch of other stuff. Completely disassembled it, sorted out all the best parts, and made a single-gang out of it. Mine's a drawbar type, but other than that, it's the same idea. If you can leave the angle-adjusting mechanism intact, do, but if not, set it at the steepest angle where it cuts the best.
