You can purchase a special grinding wheel that is made just to sharpen mower sickles. I have one though it is well worn and probably should be replaced. The last two years I've done it the lazy way and used my Makita right angle grinder to sharpen the sections. It doesn't put as precise an angle on the sections but they seem to cut the hay okay to me. Haven't been able to tell the difference. I use the sections that serated on the bottom.

As little as possible. I use a 4" grinder and hit them just enough to put the edge back on. I follow the angle that was on them and sharpen them from the top side. I don't try to remove all the little nicks, just put the edge back on them. I use smooth blades and serated bottoms.

Grinder should work okay. Just keep all the angles the same as they were. Replace any that are chipped or bent.

I like bottom-serated blades, or smooth blades, for grass hay. I find top serated blades plug up with the fine hay, especially if the ledger plates are also well-serated. But that's in my climate, my hay. Might be different for you.
