I just acquired a JD 14 foot disc from a neighbor and need to figure out the model number so I can replace some broken blades. Here is what I DO know: It has two rear gangs, 10 blades each, on 8 1/2 inch centers. It has two split front gangs, with five blades on each, again on 8 1/2 inch centers. The blades are currently 17 inches in diameter but I have no idea of the original size. The threaded end of the axle appears to be 1 or 1 1/8 inches in diameter, I have applied PB Blaster to loosen the nut and pull one apart to determine the axle shape and size. It has four lift wheels (four bolt pattern), set up in tandem. The main tube down the center is round and has a sticker that says "FWA" on it. The frame is 3" channel iron in sort of a butterfly-wings shape, with the rear gangs "nested" in behind with the same shape. If anyone knows the model number and/or era of this disk let me know as I would like to get parts and an owner's manual if possible. Thanks!

If it was mine and me I would not go to the JD dealership for disc blades. The difference in the thicker being cheaper is one is US made and the other is imported I would bet. I would change all of the front blades while I had it apart as most of the labor is in disassembly and assembly and it is not easy. You say you need 8-9 blades on the front and it has 20 total. Tear it down and go to your local farm supply or check with Agri-Supply and mail order discs. The heaviest gauge 18" disc they sell (4.76 mm which equates to slightly more than 7 gauge) is only $8.76. They are Brazilian made and you can get a less expensive Indian made and I have used them for years and know plenty of full time farmers that would not buy anything else. I don't know what shipping would cost but it would be worth the call to an 800 number to see. You could also step up to the 20" for less than the 18" that you were quoted by the dealer. Change all of the front ones and be done with it for about $100 more. I bet after you change the others you will better understand what I am talking about on how much of a pain these things are to change. Then next year or when they need it change the back one to the same.

My JD dealer was surprised to find that the 18" blades were available in two thicknesses (I decided to go 18" since mine were worn to around 17 anyway) and the thinner blades were MORE expensive than the heavier guage blades....$15.50 vs. $13.50. Does that make sense?

I don't have any broken on the rear gangs but the front are pretty sad so I think I need about 8 or 9. :(

Easiest way would be too contact your local deere dealer and they could tell ya if the FWA is the model, which I'm sure it is. My dad has a small 6' KBA disk without wheel carrier on it. I have a catalog around here somewhere that has owners manuals in it for deere products, well its a deere manual catalog so naturally it would :o)
Give me an email if you would like the number. I'm going to be looking for it as I have to order a couple of manuals myself.

Thanks for all the info. I called the JD dealer and he said they made an FW and an FWA "disc harrow". They came with 18 or optional 20 inch blades. I was able to order an owners manual through him.

Thanks again!

You have a 'FWA' model. The letters have to do with what options it has, I never did figure out what they all meant. I have BWA I think, that's a ridgid frame with folding wings, hydraulics, 4 wheels. Is yours the one with the chains on the back gangs?

Shoup or some of the other suppliers can get all sizes of blades, axles, bearings, etc. if JD seems high & you don't mind aftermarket sources.

Yes, there is a chain that runs through a pulley from the rear gang up to the lift wheel area. I had never heard of the FWA disc so was wondering what that label indicated.

Thanks!

It can be _real_ expensive to replace all the disk blades, & difficult to replace just a couple - never match the size right with a couple new blades, if bigger they will throw too much dirt. You may want to scrounge around for some used blades, be able to match what you have on the disk. That is, if you are doing this on a budget. :)

Not familiar with FWA disk, but that might well be the model. They made AWs, BWs, etc.
