I am looking to buy a NH 256 rake and have it down to two rakes. One has a dooly wheel setup and the other doesn't. Both the same price but the one with the dolly is pretty rusted yp but still rotates smoothly. What function does the dolly wheel have on these rakes?? I can get a new dolly wheel attatchment for around 300 dollars too. Just want to know if they work different with the dolly's or not.

Thanx

I have a 1993 NH with the dolly wheels.
1 Its easier too hook up, 2 its easy to move by hand, 3 It follows dips and does not allow the teeth to dig in the ground. Ive yet to replace any teeth. The only bad thing is You can't back
it with a tractor worth a nickel.

I have 2 New Holland 56 Rakes, neither of whick has dolly wheels, wish they did though. Would make hitching up to the twin rake hitch easier.
Thats really their main purpose I believe. It eliminates the jack and allows you too push it around by hand if needed. Would make for cleaner raking I would think but never having used one I couldn't say for sure. Mine have always done a super job. Can't beat a new holland rake!

Heard that the dolly wheels are used to help keep the rake at a constant level to help going through fields that have dips in them plus the other previuosly stated conveniences.

The dolly wheel arrangement is a whole lot easier to hook up, and you can make much tighter turns without the tractor wheels striking the rake. The added desireability of the dolly wheel set up is considerable. If you can get the nicer, integral rake and feel that the added condition is worth $300, get the rake that is in better shape and buy the dolly set-up.

In either case, get the dolly wheels.

Dollies are around here, but not popular. I've always figured an extra 2 wheels will press down more hay into the dirt, knock off more alfalfa leaves.. Hay quality is _always_ the name of the hay game, not ease of use. :)

But then, I rake using a IHC 300 with fasthitch, or Ford with a good 3-point extended drawbar so I can position the rake up or down on the fly, as well as during hook-up....
