With so many brands and price variations, which brand(s) do you like?

On the lower priced side:
King Kutter - American - side discharge $1100.00
Caroni - Italian - side discharge $1000.00
Sitrex - $1200.00 - Italian - rear discharge hard tires

High Priced:
Befco - $1800.00 rear discharge
Land Pride - $1850 - rear discharge
Bush Hog - $1800.00 - rear discharge
Woods - $1975.00 - rear discharge

Do you really get what you pay for? Some seem heavier and thicker steel. Will the higher price mowers really last longer and need less repairs? I have not heard of some of these brands before this quest.

It will be used for 5.5 acres of grass and weed but mostly a football field of weed & grass. Sometimes the weed can grow up to my knees (I am 6' tall).

What's your experience and opinions?

Thanks and I will use this info to make a purchase this weekend.

Ihave a 6 foot land pride that took the place of a woods, heavyer mower, not that much of a better mower but when you put them side by side with the same paint job not much difference till you get your check book out.

I think the chute on side discharge is there to deflect stones, etc into the ground. Meaning, anybody who takes the chute off needs to keep the machine away from people.

Good mowers also have cast iron pulleys (belts run cooler). Cheap machines have stamped steel pulleys. But good machines (professional) are designed to cut grass 40+ hour/week wet or dry.

For 5.5 acres I would consider a King Kutter (check for zerks on all spindles and casters) but the big consideration is getting parts. The big name brands will always be there. In any case, keep it greased and don't hit rocks or trees with it. It will be the last groomer you buy.

If it was my $$, i'd buy the "rear" discharge Woods, and look for a better price. I think Bush Hog quality has slipped a bit in the last couple years, and Woods will have parts if needed 20 years from now. All so, I've had really good luck with all the Woods rotary and finish mowers i own/owned. Robert

i HAVE A 6' King Kutter. It works good, but I never let the grass get up to my knees. I would probaly not buy this mower for your application. For grass that long, you want a rear discharge mower. Otherwise the chute will clog, even in the lowest gears.

If you do get a KK, unbolt the guard and chute....it is a pain in the rear. It doesn't do anything structural to the mower, but it has a lower bar that catches long grass, quickly requireing a trip off the tractor seat. It also bangs into stuff. Once you take this off, a KK is a great mower, but I don't think you want a windrow that 6' of knee high grass will give you.

Take Care
Steve

Hi Neil,
I have a Bushog 6'rotary mower and Bushog 5' finish mower. The rotary is about 20 years old and the finish is about 7 years old. I have only replaced wheel bushings and blades on both. The reason I bought Bushog in the beginning is that the dealer is a friend. However, the quality is there. For 5.5 acres or a football field, you can get by with a less expensive mower. Make sure the wheels all have grease fittings and grease them before each use.I have about 40 acres that I mow probably twice a month during warm weather. Good luck.
