I need to operate the hydraulic lift on my JD 290 corn planter with my farmall H tractor. The tractor only has a one-way hydraulic system, I believe. I need information about the hydraulic cylinder I need to operate the planter. Bore and stroke and if the one-way system will be a problem. I'm very new to the tractor game.

I think the 'H' will have lower pressure than most other tractors, so you might need an oversized cylinder. Common cylinder size is 3" by 8" stroke. If you only have a 2-way cylinder, you will need to put a breather vent on one of the fittings, and run they single hose onto the other fitting.

These are general thoughts, since I haven't used that exact equipment....

You do not need very much hydraulic pressure. The old JD two-cylinder tractors that the 290 planters were used with had only 700-800 psi hyd systems. Your planter uses a standard 8 inch stroke cylinder. A 2 1/2 or 3 inch diameter should work great.

Are you sure it's not a rope trip planter? We have one to plant sweet corn behind our barn which uses this system is why I ask, if it is you don't need hydraulics at all.

JD 290 planter had an option available to use a remote hydraulic cylinder instead of the rope trip clutch. One removed many of the clutch lift parts and in stalled the parts to adapt the hydraulic cylinder.

You don't need 2 way hydraulics to use this planter. In fact, you shouldn't use 2 way.

John Deere had two way hydraulic systems even on the old 2-cylinder tractors. My 290 manual only shows the JD two way Hydraulic cylinder used on the planter. It does not specify whether or not a one way will work. I'm thinking maybe not.

I once had the same problem, but with an Allis WD.
What I did was get what I believe was a 2 way hydraulic valve and mounted it on the tractor. Then I ran my original output hose to this valve. Then I ran a new output hose out of the valve to the implement. For my return hose I found a plug on the transmission that I removed and connected
the hose there. It was rather crude, but the system worked great.
