With the main plunger all the way foward push the wadboard into the bale chamber until it is approximately 3 1/2 inches from the side then install chain and tighten both of them also check the bearings in the idler sprocket where both chains attach then turn it over by hand and see that nothing is binding and then see if the bales come out straight if not you may have to jump the chain a tooth at a time to adjust bale shape. I had one to do the same thing and we straightened out the wadboard and went back to work. Hope this helps

Thanks, as soon as I make a new wadboard I will give it a try. Should I be concerned about the position of the needles? They appear to be run by one of two chains that run along the side of the plunger chamber.

I have a newer NH baler (no wad board, I've only read of those things!) but needle timing is very important. I don't know if your broken chain affects the needle timing tho?

You might be wise to invest in a manual for your baler, NH is very good at explaining how to get things to work on the balers, it would be money well invested.
