Am I the only one who thinks city folks are crazy? I was able to make it to an estate auction today of a man who was 83 when he passed and was a draft horse fan his entire life so I thought this would give me a good indication what local horse equipment prices were.(I'm in south-central Wisconsin) As with any auction some of the things you think will go cheap goes high and what should go high goes cheap but this was crazy!!

The strangest one was a John Deere iron wheel tractor hay rake with no paint left on it and it sold for $280!!!! I asked the guy what he was going to use it for and he said he was going to put it out in his front yard!! There was a Case horse drawn with iron wheels next to it in better shape than the Deere and that one only went for $55. I guess that one is also going on somebody's front lawn.

The biggest heartbreaker was there were 4 old horse drawn grain drills (3 on wood and 1 with iron wheels) in fairly good shape they went for $150 to $300 and everyone of them was going to be used as flower planters.

Sorry for ranting but I needed to get that off my chest. :-)

My 2 bits worth,

Old Iron

I don't see too many nice wood grain drills up here in mn. I went to an auction once where there were some in a grove and people were buying them for the side plates and leaving the rest. I know of one at my godfathers place not in too bad of shape sitting in his pasture. I think it was made by the american seed drill company or somthing close to that. Well I didn't get it out soon enough and some one stole the side plates and one of the wood wheels. he has some other machinery there and all of the seats are missing too. It just makes me mad machinery can sit for twenty years or more and as soon as I show interest all of the parts start dissapearing.

I'vew seen several of those steel wheeled hayrakes go for between $10 and $20 here in east central IN, I bought a JD Van Brunt grain drill like you described for $10 at a sale a couple of years back, and also a JD 494 planter for $1. You just need to be in the right place at the right time and hope there are no "Antique Dealers" around or the prices will go high cause most of them don't know what thye are buying other thna yard art.

Hey OI,
Them grain drills...
Wish I could have been there. I'd like to have one for deer plots. Might have saved One of them from the flowers anyway.
Some folks don't even like to see a guy part out an old tractor or implement. They say it should have been restored or fixed up instead.
But I think there's enough people out there- like you for example- that will save enough of them to let the people coming behind us know what these machines were and what they did.
And through those few machines, let the people know
what the men that built and used them were. And Did.
Because you know, we can't save them all.
