I am about to become the owner of a new idea trailer type sickle mower. I have used sickle mowers alot and wondering if anyone has made a metal pitman to use in place of the wood and how they got around the caps that connect it to the blade. Thanks for any suggestions

How about a reverse of this question, I have a Dearborne 14-16 mower that was made mith a metal pitman. It has been welded up about 3 times and I was going to get a new one from Ford/New Holland. They want over $100 Cdn. Now has anyone made up a WOODEN PIT MAN for this mower? Thanks guys.

I made one out of pipe once for a mower,,, worked great,, but the price of a new wood pitman is cheap enough so I think wood is better,,, the one I made worked but was hard on bars...Jim

My father made one for a New Idea 251. Nothing broke, but one of the parts connecting the pitman to the blades bent. I took this picture after I straightened the bent part.

Don't replace the wood pitman with metal. Did you ever stop to wonder why an implement manufacturer with a staff of design engineers would make a mower out of nothing but steel and cast iron; except for the pitman? There must be a good reason. And there is. Read the other reaponses below.

I suspect that the metal will be so heavy, compared to the wood, that you'll not be able to overcome the balance problems.

I have a New Idea trailer type mower that has a 9 ft. blade. I believe that it is a model 253. I have been unable to find a pitman. Do you know where to get parts. By the way, stay with the wood.

The wood pitman is the "Fuse" for the mower. It saves the mower when it hits something it shouldn't cut.

I would stay with wood. The wood beaks protecting the drive train.
