Realize a bit off the subject, but looking for inputs for winter horse pasture that I could free range (ie - leave horse on without damage to the horse). Will probably rotation graze. What type grass do you like?

Both ideas sound fine but stay away from Rye grass. If you have pregnant mares rye can cause the horse to abort. I live in MN so the only type of winter pasture we have is snow. But all my pastures are timothy, orchard, broome and blue grass mix. No rye and every vet will tell you the same also stay away from tall fescue.

Pull up this page and read before you talk about something you have no idea about.
I've had horses for years and have supplied horse owner with hay for ten. If I am mistaken please let me know.http://www.library.usyd.edu.au/VEIN/links/pact/ryegrassstaggers.html

Depends where you are located. Here in the south (arkansas) we use small grains (wheat, rye, ryegrass, etc.)seeded into permanent pastures. There should not be any problems with idle horses. You should check with your local Ag. extension office for recommendations in your area.

My pasture is 20 acres of mixed orchard, rye, and brome grasses, and we've had not problems at all.Last year in east central IN, we had such a mild winter that we didn't use hardly any hay at all.
