I have the same mower. Same problem. I could not even open the tractor half open without thowing the pitman off the sickle ball and I was just sitting in the driveway (not mowing). Here's what I have done. First-make sure you sickle blade is sharp and slides freely. You should be able to slide it into the bar all the way without driving it. The wear plates on mine were a little worn, but ok. I had to by .016 brass shim stock and shim the holdown clamps up to free up the sickle. I still had the problem. Called my new idea dealer and found that the irons that go on each side of the pitman stick that clamp the sickle ball are available, but one of them is $115 and the other is $65. Ouch! Didn't want to spend that much money, so what I did was to take the irons off the Pitman and reverse them. That puts the one on the rear on the front and the one on the front on the rear. Top is now on the bottom. I left the speader off and put a 1/2 inch bolt thru the hole it fits in. Used a nut with a plastic insert. Just tighten up enough so that it keeps the irons from spreading. Seems to work. I have been mowing for several hours now and have not thown the pitman off. This makes it difficult to change the sickle, but at least I can mow the weeds.

I have broken pitman sticks last year, but was able to go to my new idea dealer and buy a new one. Think it was about $60.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Bill!! You have helped a lot. I've a chance to buy two more mowers for 125.00 and I think I'll be doing it!! I allready have a spare bar and knife set and plan to change mine. I allready thought that would help. Thanks. I also found that pitmans are VERY expensive for this mower. Thanks a bunch!! Larry
