I'm using an old John Deere 2 row corn planter in
April to seed about 2 acres to be used only for a
wildlife plot. This machine is now set at 38" spacing and I would like to know if this sounds correct or too wide. Field size is 100' x 800'.

38 in. rows will work fine. Are you using corn or milo.

I assume you are planting corn?

I planted both 38" and 30" rows. I had a hilly farm, and prefered the 38" rows because it made cultivation on the side hills less of a problem.

In all reality, it does not matter for the size of field you are planting. The benefit to the narrow rows is that the corn shades the ground faster to conserv water. The population of plants per acre should stay the same. Where I farmed I wanted to plant 20,000 to the acre, to have 18,000 grow and produce corn.
