Am a teen age would-be farmer, looking at an Oliver 60T baler - in good condition, stored inside, little rust. Owner reports one knotter fails to tie about 10% of the time. Any idea what it's worth? What is the most likely repair for the knotter? Are parts available? Any one with experience with this unit? Any helpful comments?

Tim,
I found one for my father-in-law 2 years ago. We've been using it on about 10 acres baling brome & oats, the alfalfa isn't going to be ready for another month or more. We paid $500 for it, the owner was a friend and he remembered the $1500 he spent in the gearbox. I'd say the knotter missing 10% is about right, it's just the way old balers work. If you need better performance than that, I'd look for a newer machine with better dealer support.

I think parts are going to be your biggest problem. It's hard to diagnose the knotter without knowing exactly what it does (or doesn't)when it "fails". Oliver balers, even in good shape, aren't worth much more than scrap value, not necessarily because they're bad machines, but because the serviceablilty that older New Holland and John Deere machines have isn't there. Check with an AGCO dealer before you make your decision just to see what may or may not still be available for the old Oliver equipment.
