Ok heres what we use on our 3020(sorry ex. 3020 and mind you it was a gas, now have a 4000 diesel)we use a 504 Super I round baler(4x5) but you wasnt asking about those, on the sq baler we use a 275 NH looks ruff but bales gooooodddd! we use a 7' and 9' 990 IH haybine, just recently purchased a 9' New Idea 5209 discbine, it recommends a 70hp tractor so thats not to bad on the 3020, we use a 2510 now(52hp). For a rake we use an old IH roll-bar rake for tight areas and a walton wheel rake on cart( not as good for small area becaus on your turns left or right one side will quit turning causing it to drag the hay. As for a discmower we have had an older JD 260(7'10") on it with no problem as we have bigger tractors we traded the JD in for a new KUHN GMD 700HD(9'2") I sure hope you could foller me on that i know i jumped around but i have been in the hayfield for about 24 hrs solid a lot of coffee and no sleep, we have been hitting it hard because we have around 700 acers to do with little time to do it. We do custome haying so we always have extra equipment laying around. so here in general is what my hay crew consists of: 72 JD 4000 diesel, 67 2510 gas, D-17 allis gas, and 200 Allis diesel. Mowers: JD 1207( junk DO NOT GET!!) IH 990 (9&7') NewIdea 5209 discbine and KUHN GMD 700 HD(9'2")balers: Vermeer 504 Super I, NH 275 hayliner and a ford 532 sq. baler(excellent baler baled 6000 bales a year for 30 years with out a bit of trouble). Rake Walton wheel rake and IH 14 bar rake. all excellent equipment and should do you fine, your 3020 will have more then enought power to pull any of these machines. sorry so long winded...

If you want slick setup forget the bale throwers and use a bale basket behind any of the recommende balers. I recommend JD 327 great baler,I also have one for sale if interested.

Well, I am a red guy so I will list equipment that is compatible with a 706(Same as your 3020) that you could possibly use.

-NH or JD haybine, 7 or 9 ft(7 maybe slower but it will take rough hay ground better than a 9ft). New Idea also has built some nice haybines over the years, may want to look into one of them also. NH 488 would be nice, they sell pretty cheap around here.

-Hay rake, this doesn't have to be beautiful, it just has to work. We have an old NI steel wheeled hayrake that works beautiful, it was given to us! I would look into a NH 256 or similiar model. May also want to check out a Wheel rake, they make the job go faster. We have a 404 NI wheel rake and you can go as fast as you like and it will rake a NICE windrow. I think that a Wheel Rake sells way cheaper than a Rolla-bar rake, so you may want to think about that.

-Tedder, not really necessary but nice to have.

-Baler, I would look at a NH, but I have never heard a bad thing said about JD's balers. We have a NH hayliner 269, with the supersweer pickup and we just love it(we put in 616 bales and it only broke one, not a bad baler for $550). I would personally look into a NH 311, they are one hog of a baler!!! Get a thrower, we didn't and it is a mistake unless you have alot of manpower around!

-More than 2 hayracks, not need to be pretty only functional! Atleast 2 is needed so 1 can be unloaded while you bale with the other.

-Hay elivator, get one for your barn and needs.

Also, a 2nd tractor makes things alittle easier at times;-)

Ok, here goes! I run a custom hay baling business here in north central Texas. At the present time my main tractor is a 64 model 3020 diesel. I have ran a New Holland 462 3pt. disc mower with it, no problem and also a 469 and 488 new Holland haybine with not a problem one. At teh present time I'm running a 1380 John Deere Hydro Swing Mo Co with it, 14ft. cut and having not a problem with it at all. I also run a Deere 530 Round baler with it and its only real draw back is baling up a steep hill, I just try to make sure I do that baling down hill. Could use just about 15 more horses for the steep stuff. I also have a Deere 346 wire tie square baler and it runs it fine. That is what I'm running with mine so if you have any questions feel free to email me and we can talk. The 3020 is one hoss of a mid sized tractor, seems you just can't tell it can't do it.

THis one is right up my alley. I have a J.D. 3020. I pull a J.D. 1209 Mower Conditioner. I rake with a OLD OLD J.D.Rake. and I bale with a N.H. 273 and a N.H. 65. Mower Conditioner works great J.D. has more than enough power to pull and operate it. Price 3500.00. Well worth the money. THe rake was a 25 buck item at a auction that I combined with a free be international (for the raking teeth) Oldie but works well. Baler (sorry JD70Jim)bought 273 at auction for 1200.00 hadnt had a problem. Bought a 65 from a guy for 200. and had to put 800.00 into it to make it run. I had a guy tell me that if your paying less than 1000.00 for a baler youll end up putting that back into it. I can tellyou you will. Another thing this baler mechanic told me was.. with his experience in working on balers N.H. 268, 269, 272, 273 were GOOD balers 311, 316, 326 were GREAT BUT 310, 315, 320 CRAP..So i took his advise when i bought the second 273... Good luck

P.S. I maintain the heck out of my equipment. Checking fluids, grease, oil CLEAN....

I might add that when buying an elevator , if you can , get one with a top drive. Top drives pull bales up rather than pushing them and you can reach greater heights with the same length top drive over a bottom drive. Just my own personal experience.

uh, contrary to the opinion of others, a 3020 is far more than "adequate" to operate a 9' moco. The OM for my JD 1209 moco states that 35hp is the minimum. A 3020 has 65-71hp and won't have any problems at all.

The New Holland fans are recommending Hew Holland. Surprise, surprise! This John Deere user can safely say that John Deere 24T, 336, 337 and 338 balers are excellent! Also, there is nothing wrong with a 640 rake or a 660 or a 670 rake for that matter either. Get the ones equipped with the front dolly wheels. You will need 4-5 hay wagons and the bale thrower or "kicker" is useful also.

I sure as heck wouldnt put a 9ft. haybine on a 35 hp tractor as they say you could but yeah a 3020 is fine for that job.I know that over time though a smaller tractor would start breaking down if it was on one of these.Whatever you guys say about that JD hay equimpment lol.like 95% of the farms around here use New holland equipment,
its really dependable....it really depends on how many acres you are baling as for how many hay wagons to get.if you got the extra hay help id buy lie 4 or 5 flatbed hay wagons if you.Its really not that bad with flatbed wagons,i unload them all the time.Actually, compared to kickbales,i like them more because to me they are easier to unload and arent as heavy. But whatever equipment you get as long as you do matinence on it often it should be in good working order.good luck.

took my IH 430 baler out today to try it after buying it on sale last winter for 175. works real good but will have knot hang up once in a while on right side . Knottere has a groove in it so will replace.maybe will fool with twine tensionsome more. bought manual but not real helpfull on this.

I agree with JD70Jim about John Deere hay equipment. We use a 336 and it is an excellent baler. We keep it shedded in teh off season, and it has never caused us any headaches. Hakes good uniform bales and the knotter is reliable. As with any machine...maintenance is key. Also, your 3020 is plenty of tractor to run a nine foot mower conditioner. We run a 9' New Holland mower conditioner (sickle type, not disc mower) with our 684 International...around 60 HP. They make an excellent pair and 60 HP is plenty to run it. Look around in your area and see what can be found. I'd stay away from off brand stuff and ragged out balers that you can "fix-up". Good luck.

I agree, a 3020 will easily handle a 9' mower conditioner. My reply referred to a disc mower conditioner which is another thing entirely. You may also note I gave Deere good marks for its balers and rakes. You have my sympathy, however, if you own a 1209.

What's the weak points with a 1209?

I ask as I have one, first moco I've owned. Honestly intersted, you seem to be somewhat color blind so I can get a real answer. :)

The wobble units have generally not withstood the years as well as some others (NH). Also, in my area they were not percieved as being able to handle the rocky conditions as well as NH, due to the geometry of the header as it floats, and guard angle. Just my opinion, yours may vary. There are more 20+ year old HAYBINEs around here than all others of the same vintage combined.

I'll agree with you on rocks - wow it shoots them around!

So far so good on the wobble, but, we'll see. :)

Thanks,

As I see it:
A 9' disc mower/conditioner will be a handful for a 3020.
Deere and NH brands are the only older square balers with excellent parts and service support. Few, if any 14" x18" models made by either in the last 30 years would be inadequate.
A 3020 will handle a baler with thrower and a 16' hay wagon trailing on all but the worst of slopes.
Purchasing a baler without a kicker is a mistake unless you plan on an automatic bale wagon, which probably isn't in your future.
Rotary hay rakes outperform rolabars for dry hay in most instances, but are hard to find used and decent.
New Holland, Deere, new Idea, and IH all make (made) decent rolabar rakes.

For a JD 3020 there are many midsized haying implements you can use.It depends on how much money you have to work with on the mower. How many acres do you have planning for making hay out of?Id go with a new Case IH discbine about 9 ft. wide if you got the money for it.neighbors friend has one and it works like a dream. Then for a rake you can go with just about anything.Id go for a used new holland rollabar rake.a # 56 or 256 woul be the best.they are cheap to here in ohio ones in avg. condition sell for about $5-800.it isnt really necessary for a tedder but they can be useful to ted hay if it gets rained on
but if you want one you can get just about anything.id get one wher it sends the hay out the back.A grimm or peaqua would be a few good choices. Now for a baler.im not sure if you want a reg.baler wher you stack bales on the wagon or if you are looking for a kickbaler.anyway, youre best bet for a baler would be a new holland, better off with a newer one like a 273,276,or 316 if you want one with a kicker.if you want one without a kicker, just about any # new holland baler would work.most of them are very reliable.i know that the 273 is the best of them from what ive seen.without a kicker the 273 ranges from $1000-1800 where i live at.(id strongly recommend a regular baler without a kicker for a 3020 deere and about 4 flatbed wagons if you got more than lets say 20 acres, cause it would be rough for a 3020 ona kickbaler lol)if you get flatbed wagons, remember they can never be long enough!!!i know trust me....also make sure they have relatively good decks and racks lol.you can find a few good used ones probably locally where you are from about $300 up to 1500 for brand new ones with treated decks.Oh yes,and the last thing youd want if you dont have,a hay eleveator with wheels.any kind of elevator will be good but im not sure how large youre barn is.....sorry about the extremelly long post but it was necessary..... good luck and feel free to email me at [email protected] hope i helped
