I saw a picture of a sickle mower and there is an arm which extends from the mower to what looks like, would be under one of the tractor's lift arms. Couldn't tell exactly where this hooked up on the mower. Anyway, could this be a mechincal lift for the mower bar? Just curious what this was.

My Ford model 515 sickle mower has a break back arm that sounds like what you are describing. It connects to a hitch pin under the tractor on the right side. It's purpose is to keep the sickle bar at the correct angle, about 90 degrees with respect to the tractor. It's spring loaded and if you hit something, like a rock or stump, then it will snap back to about 45 degrees and allow you time to stop before something breaks. Other mowers probably have something similar.

The Ford mowers use this arm & the variable triangle it forms when you lift the 3-point to raise the mower bar. I'm not good at explaining geometry, but the varying angles of everything makes that arm rotate a shaft, which pulls a chain, which lifts the bar with the help of a big spring under the mower.

On a NH or IHC that arm keeps the cutter bar parallel to the ground-(longways)
