I have a NH 269 baler with a 55A thrower and a 16' bale wagon. The problem is when I have the tractor (JD 4020D) at the pto speed it throws the bales past the wagon. Is there anyway I can slow the thrower down, i.e. are there different size pulleys for the thrower belt. In the meantime, is there anything wrong with reducing the rpms of the tractor.

Your 269 baler should have a rope-controlled lever to adjust the speed of the thrower. If it doesn't- then just slow the engine speed so the pto runs slower and the bales will not be tossed beyond the wagon. Doesn't take a genius to figure that out. Some of you posters are way beyond reason and common sense. Must be why you don't farm full time.

Excuse me, Phil, but I'll bet that there are things that puzzle you at times that are second nature to someone else!! Implying that the man is an idiot is not the answer he is looking for. While his experience at baling hay may not be as extensive as yours, he still deserves a decent reply. And your smart-ass post ain't one!! And, for your information, it doesn't take a genius to be a farmer. Chill out, man. All the best..... Greg

People spend thousands of dollars on computers and tractors and equipment, but won't spend ten bucks for an operator's manual to learn how to adjust it. Instead, they want the rest of us to figure it out for them.

I have owned many balers-very old,and newer models. Green, blue, and red ones. I have never ran any of my balers at Tractor PTO speed on the Tach. Some of my neigbors believe in running theirs at the tractor"s PTO speed. I wander why their balers are always being worked on? I run mine where they bale the best. I try to match ground speed to the flow of hay going into the pickup. After running your baler a while you'll find what works best for that baler. Just remember, different hay, different conditions = different operating speeds/ground speeds. Many times it's the way you have raked your hay too. I listen to my baler and sometimes you can spot trouble before it cost you a bundle, whereas you wouldn't have time to react at Tractor PTO speed. Just my 2 cents worth.

You should be able to put shims between the halves of the thrower drive pully on the front of the shaft, this gives the effect of a smaller pully and slows it down. As long as the baler doesn't overload the engine at a lower throttle setting, you can do that too. Some people just cut the throttle a little when they know a bale is about to come out. The thrower should have either a rope operated or electic driven speed control. Somebody may have trashed this before you got the baler. Do you have a manual?
