It's me again, still with banana bales coming out of my super 68 baler. We used it last year and it did OK, we minimized the banana factor by throwing big windrows at it. But this year, right on the cusp of haying season, I'd like to try to get it right. I've got all the hay dogs. I've got good cross-feed forks, and I've put them in every position imaginable - to no avail. Same problem. Hay just isn't getting to the "far" side of the chamber. We're going to mess with the timing of the tine bar to the plunger - any suggestions there?
One more thing - I think something's missing. I have the parts manual, and there is a triangular piece - a "hay stop" - that seems like it is supposed to be near the inlet to the bale chamber. Like it hung from the underside of the twine chamber, with a little rod & spring. The rod & spring are still there, but the stop is gone. What did this thing do?
Please help me Oh Lords of All Things New Holland!!! We love this baler, ties like a champ! Takes hay in by the truckload! Now if it only made a decent bale!
Thanks,
- Jim H.

Reading the problem with your baler. Did you solve the banana bales?

That little triangle with the spring is important for getting straight bales, It doesnt cure everything but it helps alot, mine was bent when I bought it, I used it for several cuttings and had similar trouble getting straight bales, over the winter I removed and straightened it and now my bales are very straight, something to do with how the hay is distibuted to the chamber. You'll have to look at another baler to see how it is set.

While you're waiting for your "hay stop" , try feeding your baler as close to the chamber as you can without running over the windrow. This always helped me to avoid bananna bales. Also make sure that your bale-chamber is really clean and shiny.

Which side is the short side of the bale coming out of? I had a new holland, have a 346 John Deere now and love it. You might try giveing the cranks on the back a few turns down on the side that is long, that should help some, can't guarantee it will take it all out but thats what I have done.

The knives need sharpened or reshimmed to cut the hay instead of pulling at it. The hay stops mount up and down on the side of the bale chamber, if the pin and spring is on the bottom you are missing a dog.

there are also replacement feeder tines that are longer- since I replaced mine, 99% of the bales are great.
