I would like to purchase a sickle mower to use on an 860 Ford and maybe ocasionly on a 9n. I won't mow a lot with it but don't want to put up with something that doesn't work well or causes a lot of problems. Some one said a model 451 N.H. would be a good choice. Just looking for advice from someone who has had some experience with some.

Thanks in advance REM

I own a NH 451 sickle mower. I've had it for years. It is an excellent piece of equipment, and has served me faithfully. It's easy to mount on the tractor, easy to service, easy to understand, and works very well. What more can you ask? I highly recommend the NH 451 to anyone needing a sickle mower.

I had a New Holland 450 sickle mower and I really liked it. Would still have it if I didn't have to take it to the sale. Ex-wife problems. It was a 7 foot cut and as soon as I can get ahold of another one I will. Still have 2 extra sickles for it too.

I just got done with my first year at grass hay harvesting. I bought a NH451 with new sections for $300 here in Oregon and pulledit with a 9N,it worked wonders. This city bow actually was able to do this. The only time I had a hard time was in a very heavy field with lots of clover, it would clog up at times but it did finish the whole job. Just get the manual and keep it sharp and in adjustment.

I use a Ford 515 on my 8N, which I picked up at an auction for $400. I had to replace one section (about another $6) and after a year's use had to replace the belt (I think that was $75).

It works as well as the new ones, although you might have to look around a little to find one.

good luck,
Tom

Where is your location? If you are in/around TN, I can help you get a sickle bar mower for less than $1000. It fits compact tractors, so it is probably just what you are looking for.

REM,
I just went through this. Looking at all types of options for a mower. New sickes, used sickles and used disc mowers. Not sure if you're looking new or used but I was quoted $4200 for a new New Holland 450 7' sickle mower. $3200 on a new 7' Befco. $1989 on a new 7' Superior. $2212 on a new 7' Totunni (think that's how it's spelled. Looked pretty hard for a local dealer to quote a New Idea, which is what I had me eye on but couldn't find one local to me that either could or would get one. Even the one's that sold other Agco stuff wanted to sell me something else. I looked at some used sickles and used disc mowers and what I found was exactly that, USED and for the money being asked for them, I decided to buy new.
Anyway, thought this might help.

A New Holland 451, a Deere 350, an MF 42, or a Ford 515. All balanced heads. Even an Allis-Chalmers #82 would be an OK choice. International Harvester also made a balanced-head mower, as did New Idea, but I can't recall what model numbers they were. New Idea may still have one in their current lineup.
