Has anyone ever attempted to convert a pitman arm sickle bar mower to a Balancer head "wobble box" design? I'm looking for plans or ideas. I think it can be done but I would like to learn from the mistakes of others before making all of them myself. Thanks for any help.

the New Holland wobble box design is brilliant, but one of the first major problems you will encounter in actual use. i like the simplier eccentric design similiar to hesstons pt-10. would you consider measuring and copying a new holland part? the yokes are not so bad, but the wobble geometry would make most engineers hide under a reference book. when one of mine broke, i considered welding and re-machining. If i remember correctly, i would have had to make an angled holding fixture. i went ahead and paid the gold plated price for the part.

Considering the price of a decent used balanced head mower, the biggest mistake would be taking a decent wobble unit and trying to cob it onto a cutterbar and shoe designed for a pitman.

I was talking about making a wobble box from scratch. I'm a toolmaker by trade and really don't think they would be hard to build once you had a design nailed down.

My number one question would be why? If it were to do it just too see if it could be done that woudl be one thing, but for practical purposes, I can't see the point. I admire the idea of trying something like that but mowers are out there and are not too bad on price. Guess what I'm trying to say is its one thing to do it too see if you could do it and another good used mowers are available without the time and trial and error fitting. My 2 cents worth and I'm not trying to dicourage you from trying it, just want to make that sure you know that.
