Sickle Mower Problem

I replaced the knives and ledger plates on my model 41 MF sickle mower. I put it back together, but some of the knives were running high above the ledger plates. I replaced the hold-downs. It helped, but some are still running high. An article in the archives said to use shims to correct the problem, another to use a hammer to bend the rock guards up. Which is it? If I use shims, does TSC have them, or will I need to make them?

Thanks, any information will be greatly appreciated.

sight down the tips of the guards you will be able to see if any are higher or lower than the others and those are the ones that need bending. If they are all in line then shims are needed, should be able to buy them at implement dealer.

I would think it would be better to bend the hold downs rather than the guards. When you riveted the sections back on, is there a posibility you rivited them too tight and made the cicle(sp) bar u-shaped?

Hello Fudd. Thanks for the information. I rivited the knives tight, but took care not to hit them that hard. All the knives are straight, no U-shaped ones. As for the hold-downs, I put new ones on. I had no idea that I would needed to bend new ones down. If I am wrong, let me know.

Thanks Again,
DJ(TN)
