Mower is sound, but drive chain tensioner is worn so chain can't be adjusted any tighter and jumps when hay is thick. This makes an unhealthy sound. Where can I get a new tensioner? Could I get a new one made easily at a metalshop?
Also how much play should there be between blades and cutter bar? Should they be as tight as scissors, or does that put strain on the mower drive mechanism? Any sound help is much appreciated - thank you.

David,

What is worn on the tensioner? It is also possible to replace the chain, which is sure to have stretched and worn over the years. I believe it is #60 chain, nothing special. Or you might have enough adjustment to take a link out of your chain. According to the operator's manual, your blades should be adjusted 1/16" from the ledger plates. Naturally the closer you can get them without binding, the easier it will cut.

Good luck,

Mark
