Trying to I.D. an old 7' sickle-bar, might be a New Holland. Took some polaroids (which I wish I could post)and the cutting blade into a local New Holland dealer last night, the gentleman who runs the place looked it over and declared it isn't a NH, may well be an old Ferguson. He goes back a ways, so maybe he knows sumthin'. The drive joint on the cutting bar has a ball that the drive arm clamps onto from each side with a spring loaded latch. He says no NH's ever had that, but he believes it's typical of Ferguson. Also, the long coil spring that runs left/rignt along the back is typical of old Fergie's, not NH's.

I am back to the begining, can't figure out what this thing is. Went over it agan with a fine toothed flashlight, found ONE number on a bracket. There's a diamond-shape with what might be a "D" in it, then "5MO-1309" Any ideas?

I'm not saying it's not a Massey, it may very well be. But the ball and spring loaded connector that your dealer said was never on any NH's sounds exactly like mine.

I can't help ID it either - sounds like others have. But I'd agree, almost all mowers have that ball & spring drive from that era. Ford's did. Now, did New Holland make their own mower?

Your sickle bar mower isnt a New Holland, it is in fact a 1948 Massey Ferguson Model 60. the mower u are describing is exactly like the one i had a few years ago. I had the same problem of trying to figure out what it was. After my dealer did about 3 weeks worth of searching he found out that it was a the model 60 Massey.

Have your dealer do some checking, i will bet the farm that it is in fact a model 60, post back if u find out anything.

Jim, many thanks. I've been pulling out what little hair I have left trying to figure this one out.

Can you double check me on some more data? There is a breakaway pivot on the left, but another up-down pivot next to that. The drive asm. swings up-down relative to the 3-point frame. There's another pivot for the bar. The way this was set up, the big coil spring on the back is relaxed while the mower is down, then pulled apart when raised. It only seems to lift the drive unit a little, no real lift to the bar.

There's a pulley and cable arrangement too: one end attaches to the same bracket as the coil spring, on the right, then a cable runs above the spring to a pulley on the upper left of the drive frame. Then down around another pulley and forwards. This is where my cable is broken, but my friend dug up another bracket w/pulley that he thinks bolted to the left axle. What did the cable do? Help lift something?

Still sound like a Massey and/or Ferguson 60? Did you ever get a manual? Any idea what color it once was?

Thanks again for your time and help.

Go to your M-F dealer, if he's knowledgable, he'll be able to cross-reference for Massey-Harris, cause if its a '48, it'd be a Massey Harris. (Massey-Harris hadn't joined w/Fergison yet in '48.) The diamond w/D in it sounds like a Massey-Harris marking, if my memory is right. I mowed lots of acres of alfalfa w/M-H #6 semi-mounted mower as a kid. (It was a relly good mower-could mow circles around neighbors with IH & JD.) Seems like they always used a diamond w/ a D or an M imposed over an H inside a diamond on parts. Look for a "Made in Canada" on it someplace, too. I believe all Massey implements from that era were made in Canada. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

JAL, thanks for the info. You're right, if it's a '48, it can't be a MF. I'll start bothering a MF dealer now, I've exhausted the leads at the Ford and New Holland places.

My massey ferguson dealer told me it was a massey ferguson, it could be a massey harris, but my dealer found a couple of pics of it from his parts book and got me two of the sickle blades, and told me how to correctly hook it up, he also added that the mower was made mainly for the 8n tractors which was the reason i bought it in the first place from the guy who sold it to me.
