I am looking at buying a JD model 70 and the current owner says that one of the plugs fouls. What are the possible causes? Bad ignition?, Bad valves?, bad rings, cracked block? The cracked block has me the most concerned. Is there anyway to identify these problems without taring down the engine? How about the cost of the repairs if needed or is it something I could tackle myself. In a past life I was an auto mechanic (before computers).

Try to determine if the plug is fouled with oil, fuel or water. that should help in determining
what the problem is. also a cylinder pressure test
could be helpful. Hook a air supply to cyl.thru
the spark plug hole with the valves closed. If you get bubbles in the radiator, hear air in the crank case, carb intake or exhaust. Can also give clues. Good luck
