After tightening the tension, my mower mows ALOT better :). How do I check the tension. I don't want to overtighten it and destroy the bearings in the spindles.

I have a RM 59-1 on a 9N Ford. I loosen the idler and tighten the bolt with the spring tension. Straight accross the pully from where you are tighening the bolt is a small piece of metal that will fowl on the idler puller if you over tighten. That small piece of metal is the tension guide. Tighten it till it just about touches the pulley, I tap on the idler pulley bolt I loosened at the start to snug the tension up. I figure after 20 plus years it might not slide along on its own as it did when new.
