Sort of depends on what you are pulling it with. If you have 3 point either a semi intrigal(front mounts on 3 point bar) or a full 3 point with pto drive work well. Advantage of pto drive is they don't stop when you turn around. Have not seen many bad newer rakes (newer since they did away with steel wheels) and some of those were ok too. As said before watch for bearings on bars and that drive is good weather pto or gearbox as in ground driven.

Mike, I don't know where you are, but I have an IHC model 15 for sale for $350. It's in fair shape, and will still rake hay for a long time.I'm in east central Indiana. e-mail if interested.

I think rakes are pretty easy to find but what you need depends a lot on how many acres you are using it for. If you have just a few acres to mess with, you could even get a horse drawn side delivery rake if you had to and just go a little slower. I bought a 4 bar JD rake at a sale a month ago only needs a couple teeth and a 4" tire and paid $20. Biggest thing to watch for is make sure the teeth are all there and the bearings are not shot. I would think the rake ought to be your cheapest implement for doing hay. Would have been cheaper for you if it were October though.

Locally 2 wheel NH & JD side rakes with 5 bars driven by a shaft on the rubber wheels are most popular/ do the best job. They can bring over $1000 for the NH 256 or newer, but you can sometimes find a good NH 56 rake for just under $500 (saw one go for $325 this spring, kicking myself...). The NH 55 is pretty good & runs about $300 - but the wheels aren't offset so it does not follow bumpy ground as well.

There are pto rakes, wheel rakes, and so on - some regions those seem popular, but not 'here' so I can only go by what people use 'here'. I have a NH 55 & get along fine with it. I'm not familiar with the JD model numbers but seem to be just as popular.
