I've been thinking about getting some haying equipment. I'm not looking to make a living out of it, but just to get some use out of a few acres of grass, and enough to cover costs. My tractor is A MF35 Diesel in pretty good shape.

I've been browsing the local free adavertising tabloid for a couple of weeks. Currently advertised are a JD 14T baler and JD sickle. Seller is asking $350 for the baler and $250 for the sickle. I've seen sickles advertised twice now for about $100 - one a Ford, and don't recall the other. That's all the info I have. I haven't been out to look at them, and don't really know what to look for, or if these are reasonable prices. I suspect price is pretty dependent on condition, but the seller just says they're old, and he's getting out of the business and has used them regularly in the past with just normal maintenance.

Any thoughts on price? What do I look for in the way of red flags? Any questions I should ask the seller that would reveal important information?

Mike, Thurlow, Ken...Thanks for your replies. Sounds like pretty good advice. Hadn't thought about turning over by hand to check it out but makes sense. It might be possible to get it out to try it. It sounds like I might want to hold on the sickle and look for something at a better price and that's a belt drive. It also sounds like it's worth taking the drive - about 20 miles away - to check out the baler. If it's still available on Sunday, I'll do that.

I went out to the John Deere web site to see if I could find any info on the 14T. They had a search on used equipment, so I ran that and found four 14Ts listed - three with pictures. I think, if I recall, two were priced at $350, one at $300 and one at $1100. I think it was the $300 one that didn't have a picture, but just from the pics, the $1100 one looked in the poorest shape - of course, that doesn't say anything about how it runs, just possibly that it wasn't under cover, or got more use. I've tried to get back there and don't seem to be able to, so can't recheck these.

A previous post to this board - or maybe to another board - suggested that the "best" used balers to be looking for would be JD 24T or 336, or NH 273 or 276, but I haven't seen any of those around here yet, but have only been looking seriously for a week or two. Based on that, sounds like Ken did OK with his 24T. I have been expecting to have to pay over $500, so was pleased to see something worth taking a look at for under that - especially after seeing them on the JD web site at about the same price. Of course, I'm a believer in that you get what you pay for and cheaper could be a mistake! :)

Chuck,
$350 for the baler dosen't seem bad at all if it's in pretty decent shape. Also look for rusted out spots inside the baler. I'm doing the same type of thing that you are, looking for a baler and sickle mower. I looked at a NH 273 last week and what I call the "throat" was entirely rusted out. I mean gone. The baler had sat for years in the weather. Oh well, have to keep looking. Ask the owner if he would let you take it and try it. It's worth asking...
Good luck. Hope you get going soon. I'm having a hard time finding something where I live, near Houston.

RE: Sickle mower; Although untold thousands were built using pitman drive (and worked quite well), I think you'd be much happier with belt driven one, if you have a choice.

Chuck - I'm doing the same kind of thing you are trying to do - baling a few acres. I bought a 24T (slightly newer than the 14T) for $500 and a Ford 501 sickle for $250. I had the owner run the baler (it had sat for five years so it would turn easily by hand) and trip the knotters to make sure it was in time. (ideally do this by hand so if it isn't in time you won't break anything. I didn't test the knotters to see if it would tie until I got it home (luckily it did tie). The worn out knotters would be a concern on a 14T. I felt that I got a pretty good deal on considering I didn't have to do much on it.
As for the sickle mower, it needed all new sections and guards before it would cut right. Sections were inexpensive but the guards were about $4 a piece. $250 was a little high for the condition of the mower but I was buying both baler and mower from the same widow so it averaged out. Hope this helps.
