I square bail 50 acres of orchard grass a year . I just bought a NH 847 round bailer to bail rained on hay and to have a few round bales to sell. Tried bailing some dryed out rained on hay yesterday and had trouble with it creating chaff untill it jamed up. Reread the book and it said to bail with dew on the hay. It worked great untill about noon when the sun came out. Is this the nature of a round bailer or just a chain bailer? Is there any thing I can due to help this problem? Thanks, Bill

Here are a few things to try. 1 slower pto speed until core forms. 2 faster ground speed until core forms. 3 larger winrows to start core faster. 4 shut machine off and pull forward allowing hay to gather in front of pickup then kick pto in sucking up more hay to start core. All balers have some quirks about starting hay depinding on moisture length of hay type of hay and time of day. Don't give up because after you've baled a while you will know how to take care of most feeding problems when they happen.

i have a nh 848 chain baler in dry conditions all you have to do is slow your pto speed down a little until the core is formed.

I have a NH 845 round baler that we've owned since purchase new. Baled a lot of hay with it. I too sometimes have trouble starting a bale when the hay is very dry. Combined fescue can be a challenge if real dry. I've baled very early in the day when the dew was on to get some moisture, or baled late in the evening. One thing I do when having problems getting a bale started in dry hay is to feed some of the windrow in to the baler and then stop and let the baler get a solid core started. After the baler "digests" the hay in the pickup and gets it's core started you can go ahead and start baling as normal. It's a little bit of a pain, but it will work. Just slows you down a little.
