Sickle mower doesn't cut good

I recently bought a Ford 515 sickle mower. I gave it a complete lube job and used it for the first time a couple days ago. Everything works good, except it doesnt cut as well as I had hoped. Im using it to cut grass thats about 2 tall at the edge of a ditch bank and under trees.

After it cuts the grass, the grass just lays on top of the cutter bar. So, I have to back up to get the grass off. Ive tried angling the bar so the guards point up, but that didnt help. I took a closer look and some of the grass is getting stuck in the guards in front of the knife sections. It also doesnt cut real good even if there is no grass laying on it. Most of the knife sections are not down tight against the ledger plates on the guards. Can the guards get bent down? Or, can the knife sections get bent up? Can I bend them back with a hammer or will they break if I pound on them?

The manual suggests using cut-free guards, has anyone ever used these? Will it cost a fortune to replace all of the guards and knife sections? Thanks.

Thanks for the ideas. I did say the grass was 2 feet (2' not 2"). Anyway, I'll check the angle of the bar and the hold down clips and try going faster!

You're probably going too slow. A sickle usually cuts best with more ground speed than less.

Touch up the knife sections with a grinder. They should be sharp enough to cut you.

Make sure the cutter bar has a little bit of "lead", it should angle forward when you are not moving so it gets pushed back to perpendicular under a load.

Have you checked the sickle cutter bar hold down plates. They designed to hold the cutter bar knifes down close to the bottom of the guard that acts as the second half of the sissors cut.

I just noticed where I missed something in the manual the first time through. It says to align the guards by striking the forward end up or down with a hammer. It also says the knife clips can be adjusted by striking the forward end of the clip up or down. So, I guess Ill get my hammer out and start wacking!

Difficult to whack _all_ the guards up - try getting the clips down first. :)

Also, check the registration of your sickle - that the knifes are going from the center of one guard to the center of another guard during one rotation.

Sickle mowers have tough going in short young fine grass, or if there is dew on the grass. There is also a 'best speed' to travel, depending on coarseness of stems, wind, phase of the moon - try slower & sometimes faster, see if that works better.

The hold down plates are all there. Is there an adjustment?

I never tried cutting anything 2in tall, What do you expect the mower to do cut it down to 1in. I never cut anything generally less thanm a foot tall. By then, it had soe use as hay, it had a stiff stim to cut thru, and less likelihood of bending to easy before being cut. But as to cutting with a dew on. On of the best cuts I got was when I was cutting and about through, and it was pararie hay, and a while of a storm came up. I had a MH horse mower, and I stopped and asked my neighbor on the mower what he wanted to do, and he said he didnt care, and we had like only 3 more passes, and we were already drowned, so I went ahead and cut it with my 1934 case CC. It cut better the any of the rest
