U-joint/yoke replacement question

I tried to put a new yoke on the pto shaft for my shredder but didn't get it quite straight and it vibrates and shakes a lot. I can see the pto shaft is wobbling and can see which way it needs to go, but I don't think I can just bend it straight. It looks like I need to cut it off and put it back on again.

Is there a right way to put that yoke onto the pto shaft straight? I was thinking that I'd cut it back off, tack it together, put it on the tractor and move it around until I get it straight, then just weld it on the tractor/shredder. Is there a better way?

Thanks,
Kerry

Kerry: Dumb question but I have to ask. Did you time the U joints on the other end of the slip shaft? If it's a square shaft you can get it out of time by 90 degrees. U joints work together not against each other. Mark

Yep, I tried that already, but I can see the pto shaft wobble when I start it turning. I got it pretty close, but I can see the shaft move around. I even let it idle and used a hacksaw blade to mark it as it came around, but I'll have to cut it loose from the yoke to fix it. I assume the guys who fix/build these things professionally use a jig or something.

I tried turning the shaft 90 degrees 4 different times but it didn't help. I can see it move where I welded the yoke to the shaft.

I think I'm going to try cutting the new yoke loose, tack it lightly on one side, put it back on the tractor/shredder, then weld it up once I get it turning straight. Maybe I can tack it lightly, line it up, then tack it a little better, then try it again...

Thanks for the idea!
Kerry
